We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to support a large-scale enterprise application modernization and data management program within a complex, multi-agency environment. This position is part of a team responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and scalability of mission-critical database systems used across financial, operational, and analytics platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 24x7 support for database infrastructure, including production operations, disaster recovery, and incident response.
- Develop, maintain, and execute installation, patch management, maintenance, and upgrade plans for SQL Server and Azure SQL environments.
- Assess the impact of new technologies or configuration changes, propose solutions to complex technical challenges, and collaborate with technical and business stakeholders on implementation strategies.
- Establish, document, and enforce database standards, policies, and procedures for performance, backup, and security management.
- Monitor and optimize database performance, space utilization, and capacity planning across development, test, and production environments.
- Manage database integrity, replication, and backup environments, ensuring high availability and recoverability.
- Execute scripts for the creation and modification of database objects (tables, views, indexes, constraints, etc.) as provided by application development teams.
- Monitor scheduled jobs and processes, troubleshoot failures, and ensure the reliability of nightly and weekly batch operations.
- Participate in configuration and support of clustered and replicated database environments, including implementation of data retention, archiving, and recovery strategies.
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive systems documentation and contribute to knowledge-sharing within the DBA and DevOps teams.
Requirements
Required Skills and Experience
7+ years of hands-on experience in database administration, specifically with Microsoft SQL Server 2016 or later.Strong knowledge of Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server on Azure VMs, including performance tuning, cost management, and security controls.Proven experience designing and managing high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions such as Always On Availability Groups, geo-replication, and point-in-time restore.Expertise in Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and other SQL Server security features.3+ years of experience creating and maintaining technical systems documentation and operational runbooks.Proficiency in database security management, including user provisioning, RBAC, encryption, and compliance practices.Experience designing and validating backup and recovery strategies for Azure SQL databases.Skilled in proactive monitoring and alerting using tools such as Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and related utilities.Strong scripting experience using PowerShell or Python to automate routine tasks, database deployments, and maintenance operations.Demonstrated success in migrating on-premises SQL Server databases to Azure SQL environments.Familiarity with ETL processes and tools such as Azure Data Factory or SSIS for data transformation and integration.Advanced expertise in query optimization, index tuning, and performance troubleshooting.Vital Tech Solutions is an Equal Opportunity Affirmative Action employer.
