GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY :

This position is primarily responsible for creating, maintaining, and improving the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) programs and

processes used to make production components with CNC equipment, and to setup CNC equipment for production machinists to

operate. This position works with M.E. (Manufacturing Engineering) staff to design tooling and uses CNC and manual equipment to

produce those tools. Additionally, this position works with the product development team during design and prototyping process.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & KRA (Key Result Areas) :

Safety / Culture

  • Performs all tasks in a safe and responsible manner.

CNC Programming and Setups

  • Sets up and operates CNC machines to run according to production schedule of both internal and external jobs in order to meet customer requirements.
  • Studies part drawings to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations and set up required.
  • Provides feedback to M.E. on drawing issues, tolerances, and machinability of features.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth of cut.
  • Performs setup of CNC equipment for production runs, verifies setup and condition of equipment, and conformance of product to drawing. Applies offsets as needed to ensure parts meet tolerance.
  • Performs daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on CNC machinery.

  • Archives programs and keeps records of revisions of CNC programs.
  • Tooling

  • Works with theE. department and production team to design and build tooling and fixturing.
  • Documents design using SolidWorks.
  • Stores drawings, models, and programs in PDM (Product Data Management)
  • Product Development

  • Works with the Product Development team to design and improve production components.
  • Uses machining equipment to produce prototype components.
  • Tests prototypes for assembly, manufacturability, form, fit, and function.
  • Attends Kaizen (Continuous improvement business philosophy) events, Gemba walks (workplace observational walkthrough), and other Lean / continuous improvement functions.
  • Participates in design reviews and DFMEA (Design failure mode and effects analysis) to ensure designs meet all stakeholder's needs.
  • Work with E. and Drafting to document tolerances and critical features.
  • Work to be done during manufacturing business hours, which may include an occasional early and / or later shift as needed. Occasional overtime may be required.

    Regular, consistent, and predictable attendance is required.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION :

    High school diploma or equivalent required.

    KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / EXPERIENCE :

  • Five years related experience and training programming CNC machining equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Uses gauges and measuring instruments to measure components both to reverse engineer and to verify conformance to drawings.
  • Understands, interprets, and edits G-code (programming language) programming.
  • Recognizes, deploys, and properly uses inserts, fixtures, and tooling.
  • Understands and has the ability to perform tool wear offsets.
  • CNC programming experience using SolidWorks / CAMWorks to create CNC programs for both CNC lathes and mills.
  • Ability to create SolidWorks drawings of parts and assemblies.
  • Strong knowledge of blueprint reading, technical math, and all GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) practices with the ability to analyze part requirements.
  • Basic project management skills, for tooling / equipment design and product development.
  • Knowledge of basic Lean and 5S (workplace organizational) methods and tools.
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety practices and regulations.
  • Ability to operate manual mills and lathes to create fixtures and tooling, or other custom machined components.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations with the added ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Effectively communicates and understands both verbal and written job instructions.
  • Ability to be flexible and adjust to priority changes with little notice and to remain calm during confrontational or high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to use sound judgement and follow-through in problem-solving and decision-making processes.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain Orenco's approved driver criteria; a valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, current insurance on personal vehicle if used for business, and meet company insurability requirements.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Indoor production environment involving some limited exposures to acetylene and nitrogen gases, varying quantities of gaseous carbon dioxide, paints, solvent fumes, and dust. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Exposure levels are below standard limits. Respirator and hearing protection are not required but will be made available upon request with approval, proper fit testing, and training. Some exposure to glare generated from welding and cutting torch processes, cuts, and scrapes which require the wearing of personal protective equipment such as face shields, safety glasses, gloves, etc.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

    Regular job duties include seeing, speaking, hearing, reading, writing, keyboarding, periods of sitting, and occasional time viewing a computer screen. Time working on the manufacturing floor also includes but is not limited to touching, measuring, cutting, stacking, holding, grasping, pushing, pulling, reaching above shoulders and below knees, low back bending, twisting, turning, kneeling, crawling, stooping, squatting, prolonged periods of standing and walking on concrete floors, climbing stairs and ladders, and repetitive foot and hand movement requiring good manual dexterity. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, reading, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to move or transfer products with an overhead crane, forklift, pallet jack, and / or hand truck and hand operation of various other equipment. Unassisted light lifting and / or carrying of under 20 lbs. is required. May also include occasional unassisted lifting and / or carrying of up to 50 lbs., lifting and / or carrying over 50 lbs. must be assisted. Operation of a motor vehicle may be required for some positions. Travel needs are determined by the department supervisory staff based on business need, required skill base, and assigned job tasks and responsibilities. Travel may require the ability to visit project sites that are situated on a variety of developed and undeveloped terrain / locations.
