Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval and award amount (up to $200,000, eligibility period one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
- United States citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
- Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or District of Columbia.
- Residency training : completion of an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies include :
ACGME-accredited programs.AOA-accredited programs.Other non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.Residents currently enrolled in ACGME / AOA accredited residency training programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged.PRPs are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.Proficiency in spoken and written English.Preferred experience : EGD and colonoscopy; see VA Qualification Standards.Physical requirements : able to lift, carry, use fingers, walk, stand, bend, and use both legs and hands; can distinguish basic colors; hearing (assistive devices may be permitted); mental and emotional stability.Near vision correctable at 13” to 16”, far vision correctable to 20 / 20 in one eye and 20 / 40 in the other.Physical Requirements

The 2‑page resume requirement does not apply to this occupational series.Responsibility for quality and timeliness of services, customer satisfaction, and compliance with standards of accrediting bodies such as the Joint Commission and the Inspector General's Combined Assessment Program.Responsible for appropriate use of available resources and maintaining state‑of‑the‑art standards of care in specialty service.May be asked to complete projects related to area of specialty, expertise, and interests relevant to VA directives and policies.Examples include leading administrative or clinical teams for VA and providing project leadership as appropriate.General accomplishment of the health‑care delivery mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs.Services are subject to scrutiny by Congressional interests, service organizations, the public, and the media.Board certification in Gastroenterology required; completion of an appropriate residency or fellowship.Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support required.Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and consult on adult patients with gastrointestinal disorders; order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.Perform routine internal medicine procedures, including paracentesis and anoscopy.Provide patient education regarding diagnosis and medication management.Privileges include supervision, teaching, and involvement of medical students, trainees, and residents.Core procedures include moderate sedation, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy with and without biopsy or polypectomy, capsule endoscopy, and related interventions; provider must maintain active ACLS certification.Work schedule : Monday – Friday, 8 : 00 am – 4 : 30 pm.#J-18808-Ljbffr
