DESCRIPTION
The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a highly experienced Principal Electronic and Embedded Systems Engineer (Research and Development Engineer 5).
The incumbent's responsibilities shall include :
Serve as the technical lead and subject matter expert in the design, integration, testing, and deployment of advanced oceanographic sensing systems with a focus on embedded systems, marine robotic platforms (e.g., AUVs, ASVs, gliders), and specialized instrumentation.
Apply deep expertise in electrical and systems engineering to guide projects from concept to deployment, managing multi-disciplinary teams, contractors, and government-funded efforts in support of CORDC's research and development portfolio.
The position has wide-ranging responsibility over high-impact technical projects supporting national defense, environmental sensing, and maritime domain awareness.
Having wide-ranging experience, uses advanced engineering concepts to oversee major engineering projects and initiatives whose importance is indicated by a campus-wide profile and / or of major significance to industry partners.
Projects are significant in terms of scope, complexity, impact and budget.
Considered a subject matter expert on campus and often recognized as an expert externally in the industry.
Exercises independent judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Internal and external contacts often pertain to campus plans and objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS
Doctorate in related field or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
Expert skills associated with being recognized as subject matter expert in field. Proven experience leading technical efforts in marine robotics or autonomous systems.
Expert knowledge associated with the planning, development, and construction of most complex and significant engineering projects and initiatives. Expert knowledge of embedded systems design, microcontroller programming (C / C++), and real-time OS.
Expert knowledge of highly specialized design work. Theoretical and practical knowledge of RF propagation, HF radar scatter, ocean surface waves, underwater sound propagation, analog electronics, signal processing, image processing, and computer science and engineering.
Expert knowledge in signal processing of complex signals, eigenvalue decomposition, and optimization techniques. Proven expertise in programming Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) and parallel processing tasks for high speed signal processing algorithms.
In-depth and advanced knowledge of the engineering field. Applies principles, practices and procedures within discipline to complete most difficult, complex and significant assignments. Advanced knowledge and experience managing complex technical tasks in multiple technical areas (analog electronics, signal processing, image processing, computer science and engineering) assess any technical deficiencies as systems are developed, tested, and used in the field.
Programming experience in MATLAB, C / C++ to develop data analysis software and to test, debug, diagnose, and repair systems. Program Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) and parallel processing tasks for high speed signal processing algorithms.
Advanced project management skills to assume responsibility for accomplishment of research objectives that are significant to the Campus and industry. Strong project management skills and the ability to interface with sponsors and stakeholders.
Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner. Expertise with computer report preparation using MS-Word or equivalent. Manage complex technical tasks and assess technical deficiencies.
Skill and experience maintaining detailed experimental records and recording data and in analyzing and interpreting data collected. Proven ability to develop budgets and schedules for the technical development of instrumentation.
Advanced interpersonal and presentation skills. Proven expertise to communicate effectively with academic, staff and student personnel orally, in writing and in person
Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with both internal and external constituencies; readily assess complex challenges and barriers and recommend effective resolutions. Interact effectively and diplomatically with a diverse range of individuals including subordinates, outside contractors, and program sponsors.
Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and influence others on projects of significance. Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead engineering staff. Advise, delegate, and effectively organize and oversee out-sourced design, development and fabrication efforts.
Ability to execute large and complex work assignments in order to meet deadlines and ensure adherence to quality standards.
Proficient in PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium), system integration, and field testing.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range : $132,600 - $259,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent : $63.51 - $124.43
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
