POSITION SPECIFICS

The Electronic Materials and Devices Department (EMDD) of the Penn State Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is seeking a motivated candidate to fill the role of a Materials Research and Development Engineer. This position will directly support research and development efforts in electronic materials processing, characterization / testing, semiconductor device fabrication, sample preparation, polishing, and / or materials growth / synthesis. EMDD is a vertically integrated lab with key areas of focus including wide / ultrawide bandgap semiconductors, sensors, ceramics, laser processing, and additive manufacturing.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preparing samples (e.g., cutting, lapping, polishing, etc.).
  • Characterizing materials and devices (e.g., microscopy, spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, electrical testing, etc.).
  • Configuring furnaces / reactors and hardware for vacuum systems.
  • Running furnaces / reactors and monitoring materials growth / synthesis processes.
  • Performing equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Researching new growth / synthesis and characterization methods.
  • Analyzing characterization and testing data.
  • Preparing summaries and writing technical reports.
  • Planning project tasking and providing instructions to other staff members and students.
  • Working with other engineers and research faculty members to write new proposals, create budgets, and develop statement of work (SOW) documents.
  • ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (HIGHER LEVEL)

  • Contribute to the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical engineering products, systems, and subsystems.
  • Investigate and evaluate practical applicability of scientific theories and engineering principles to develop and improve engineering systems; identify technical approach for solving problems and meeting customer / grantor needs.
  • Apply standard practices and techniques in specific situations, correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results, and follow operations through detailed steps or processes.
  • Conduct experiments / tests in the laboratory / field to test or modify theoretical propositions; may include taking measurements, recording observations, and planning / designing experiments or tests with supervision.
  • Initiate or contribute data / analysis / design for use in technical reports, documents, proposals, papers, or oral / written presentations.
  • REQUIRED SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

  • Background knowledge of sample preparation methods (e.g., cutting, lapping, polishing, etc.).
  • Background knowledge of materials characterization methods (e.g., microscopy, spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, etc.).
  • Understanding of laboratory safety practices (PPE, chemical handling, waste disposal, etc.).
  • Ability to maintain organized and detailed notes.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • PREFERRED SKILLS / EXPERIENCE

  • Hands-on experience preparing samples.
  • Hands-on experience using materials characterization tools.
  • Basic knowledge of vacuum systems / hardware.
  • Basic knowledge of semiconductor materials and devices.
  • Experience using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • SECURITY CLEARANCE PREFERENCE

  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required.
  • LOCATION

    Your working location will be fully on-site in State College, PA. Questions related to flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

    For the Research Engineer - Intermediate Professional track : Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science and 1+ years of relevant experience. No required certifications. For the Research and Development Engineer - Professional track : Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science and no prior relevant work experience required. No required certifications.

    BACKGROUND CHECKS / CLEARANCES

    Employment with the University requires successful completion of background checks in accordance with University policies.     SALARY & BENEFITS

    The salary range for this position is $68,200.00 - $115,100.00, including all possible grades. The proposed salary range may be impacted by geographic differential.
