Recycling Laborer
This position drives trucks to recover and transport recyclables from various locations around the county.
Major duties include :
- Receiving daily tasks and assignments from supervisor.
- Operating a truck to retrieve and transport trailers of recyclable materials to processing facilities.
- Unloading cardboard from trailers.
- Completing assignments as required; following plans and instructions regarding work assignments.
- Maintaining tickets and receipts from vendors.
- Completing timecard.
- Performing related duties.
Knowledge required by the position includes :
County rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.County roads and the location of recycling trailers around the county.Safe driving and accident prevention principles.Traffic laws.Reading and comprehending operators manuals, procedures, and instructions.Hitching, pulling, and backing trailers.Reading maps.Oral and written communication.Supervisory controls are provided in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
Guidelines include traffic laws and county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
The complexity / scope of the work consists of related truck driving and manual labor duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contributes to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to retrieve recyclables from across the county and deliver them to assigned processing facilities. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of county recycling operations.
Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, contractors, vendors, and members of the general public. Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
Physical demands / work environment include :
Driving a truck and intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping.Occasionally lifting light and heavy objects.Distinguishing between shades of color.Utilizing the sense of smell.Performing work outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.Exposure to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts.Use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. if needed.Supervisory and management responsibility is none.
Minimum qualifications include :
Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship / internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid drivers license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
