Position Summary

The Preop / PACU Registered Nurse provides high-quality, compassionate care to patients before and after surgical and procedural interventions. This role involves preparing patients for surgery, recovering post-anesthesia patients, and collaborating closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and the perioperative team to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered care in a fast-paced environment.

Department Overview

The WAMP Preop / PACU unit consists of :

  • Staff : 10 RNs and 1 Patient Care Technician (PCT)
  • Facilities : 20 pre / post-op bays, 2 operating rooms (ORs), 2 GI procedural rooms, and 1 VIR procedural room
  • Patient Population : Orthopedics (total joints, arthroscopy, hand, shoulder & elbow cases), Interventional Radiology (VIR), and Gastroenterology (upper and lower scopes)

    • Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for surgical and procedural interventions by :

    • Reviewing medical history and obtaining consent forms

  • Reconciling home medications
  • Obtaining vital signs and performing EKGs as indicated
  • Initiating IV access, obtaining finger-stick blood sugar (FSBS) as needed
  • Administering IV fluids, antibiotics, and preoperative medications per orders
  • Monitor and recover post-anesthesia patients through all phases of PACU care.
  • Assess, document, and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
  • Provide discharge education and instructions, ensuring patient safety and understanding.
  • Safely discharge patients via wheelchair to their vehicle when ready.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and OR nurses to maintain smooth patient flow.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control, safety, and documentation standards.

    • Qualifications

    Required Experience :

  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience (Preop / PACU or acute care preferred)

    • Required Certifications :

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – required
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – required

    • Required Licensure :

  • Active South Carolina RN license or Multi-State / Compact RN license
