Your Role With Us :
Specimen collection Phlebotomy : Obtain appropriate samples from patients for the tests ordered as stated in Phlebotomy procedure and the Salem Health Directory of Service;
Accurate collection, processing and handling of kits for designated laboratories outside Salem Health or the designated reference laboratory.
- Collections include, but are not limited to :
- Venous Blood Collections- evacuated tube, syringe, butterfly, therapeutic phlebotomy
- Capillary Blood Collections- finger and heel sticks
- Arterial Blood Collections
- Swab Collections- throat, nasal and nasopharyngeal
- Breath tests Nursing Home Phlebotomy :
- Manage and prioritize daily and weekly blood collections at care facilities, assisted living facilities and memory care facilities.
- Glucose for Glucose Tolerance testing.
- Measure, mix and administer drink for H.Pylori breath test.
- Measure, mix and administer Lactose for Lactose Tolerance testing.
- Education of care facilities' staff in regards to ordering laboratory tests and required requisition information; Effectively communicate with care facilities' staff and providers to ensure proper care of the residents, including : inability to obtain specimens, incorrect information provided, unavailable residents, scheduling for residents' lab collections, medication last doses, fasting statuses, need for recollects and any additional information needed.
- Registration / Ordering / Locating, Obtaining and Interpreting Laboratory Orders And Registration; Ensure orders are valid including all required patient demographics, ordering provider information, testing and billing information.
- Patient test requirements / communications including fasting statuses, medication last doses, any additional requirements related to tests ordered;
EKGs and performing other tests; Register patients with a valid order for an EKG; Release EKG orders from Epic; Order EKGs as "transcribed orders" in Epic.
Follow the critical result process for reporting to Cardiology, the Cardiologist on call, ordering provider and if necessary, alerting the Rapid Response team;
Give clear and concise instructions, answer questions and give explanations.
Issue appropriate containers and instructions to patients to ensure accurate collection, handling and returning of specimens, including : stool, urine, sputum, breath, semen, saliva and any additional body fluid as ordered;
Process and handle lab specimens; Process specimens accurately and in a timely manner according to test specific stability requirement.
- Clearly document and indicate any further processing required; Provide appropriate temperature stability while specimens are being transported the Laboratory with the Couriers, P- Tube or hand carried.
- Monitor and dispose of expired supplies and equipment; Ensure all supplies and equipment utilized within use dates; Organize and prioritize workload to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
- Perform accurate positive patient identification per Laboratory policy; Follow prescribed safety techniques to maintain personal, co-worker and patient safety (wears and appropriately uses personal protective equipment as required.
Report via PSA system any unsafe situation immediately.
- Act as the face of the Laboratory; Utilize AIDET with all client interactions; Answer phone calls promptly within three rings;
- Maintain proper phone etiquette; Uses assigned scripting when appropriate; Assist clients with laboratory related questions;
Help direct and refer clients as needed.
Research and convey accurate laboratory, testing, processing, handling and specimen information to inquiring clients; Corroborate with laboratory and non-laboratory teams to provide exceptional patient care and patient experience.

Background / Expertise :
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent Required.
- One (1) year phlebotomy experience OR successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program required; Clinical rotation at Salem Hospital preferred.
- Minimum of (1) year of related experience in either a clinical, medical office, or research setting preferred.
- Experience in team process, quality management, and problem solving preferred.
- Experience with a Laboratory Information System preferred.
- Nationally recognized Phlebotomy Certification or agrees to obtain at individual's own expense within six (6) months of hire date.
Failure to obtain the Phlebotomy Certification will result in automatic separation of employment).
- Phlebotomy Certification maintenance and expense is the responsibility of the Phlebotomist.
- Uses interpersonal skills that convey a positive and supportive attitude (e.g. active listening, positive communication, stop gossip, using proper telephone etiquette).
- Must possess strong communication skills; Effective communication with all members of the health care team is essential;
Ability to learn and successfully perform the collection procedures and patient testing listed above.
Has a thorough knowledge of specimen requirements for standard tests; Ability to analyze current methods and processes, look for improvements and develop reports / recommendations;
Ability to detect and investigate problems, make evaluations supported by tangible evidence, ability to provide consultation to physicians, nurses and others in area of specialization.
Thorough and current knowledge of the principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment and safety precautions in the field of specialization required;
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with high patient volume and many distractions; Ability to focus on a task following disruptions to the work or patient flow.
Ability to train students and newly hired staff preferred.
