This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and leads the Accounting team. The Chief Financial Officer is a member of our client's Executive Leadership team and will prepare and support presentations to the Board and the Audit & Finance Committees. The Chief Financial Officer will lead day-to-day accounting functions, and ensure internal controls comply with non-profit best practices and auditor recommendations. The Chief Financial Officer will work closely with executive leadership to ensure ongoing operations and programming are effectively supported by accounting processes and procedures. The Chief Financial Officer will ensure that our client’s financial systems and procedures result in low-risk audits, and financial reports accurately represent the ongoing operations of the organization.
The Chief Financial Officer furthers the mission of our non-profit client by ensuring the accurate delivery of accounting services and financial information to stakeholders, including project and organizational leadership, Board members, funders and community partners.
Key Responsibilities :
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, sub-ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP / GASB standards and regulatory requirements.
- Produce complete and accurate monthly financial reports to present to the Audit & Finance Committee and the Board of Directors.
- Manages relationships with financial institutions to include overseeing compliance with investment policies.
- Develops and maintains multi-year sustainable financial outlook under the direction of the CEO and in close collaboration with staff leadership and the Audit & Finance Committee to support projection of expense needs and revenue requirements and projections to ensure long-term sustainability.
- Develops and maintains long-term cash flow projections for operations.
- Weekly review of Accounts Payable and sign checks and / or approve ACH payments.
- Monitor the organization’s bank accounts and cash flow on an ongoing basis.
- Manage payroll functions and recordkeeping, including the bi-monthly review of payroll and the 403B upload, quarterly payroll tax reports, insurance, and oversight of the W-2 and 1099 processes.
- Oversee and prepare for the annual audit, as well as the timely filing of annual Form 990s.
- Review and post monthly journal entries and allocations, oversee the monthly close process, and prepare financial reports in an accurate and timely manner.
- Work alongside the Development team to prepare ongoing grant budgets and financial reports for funders.
- Analyze financial data as requested by the CEO and other stakeholders and prepare financial reports as necessary.
- Monitor project budgets as necessary, keeping executive leadership apprised of status.
- Work alongside the CEO in preparing the annual budget, along with periodic reviews of financial plans against actual results with the purpose of identifying and explaining variances.
- Weekly meetings with the Leadership team to review ongoing activities and maximize organizational goals.
- Liaison with Human Resources on personnel and confidential employment information that requires a high level of maturity and trust for the position.
- Along with the entire Leadership team, create and promote a positive and supportive work environment with a stakeholder-centric emphasis.
Skills & Experience :
The ideal candidate will have experience in a complex nonprofit with multiple program components and will have :A minimum of a Bachelors’ degree in Accounting or Finance and eight (8) years of progressively increasing expertise and experience in nonprofit fund accounting; CPA preferred.A goal orientation for completing activities, with a positive team-player attitude.A proactive, hands-on managerial approach and the fortitude to actively own the responsibilities and outcomes for the Accounting Department.Solid experience coordinating audit activities and reporting to stakeholders, as well as general accounting for nonprofits, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and accounting for investments.A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting, and a clear grasp of fund accounting principles and practices.Advanced technical skills in Microsoft Suite, and accounting and reporting software systems (Blackbaud / Financial Edge NXT experience a plus).Keen analytic, organizational and problem-solving skills that result in methodical and strategic resolution and presentation.Objectivity and maturity to communicate, safeguard, and manage confidential employment information.Effective communication skills, with the ability and desire to translate financial and accounting concepts to individuals at all levels of financial sophistication.Demonstrate personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to non-profit's programs and mission.Work Environment :
This role operates on a hybrid schedule, with in-office hours from 8 : 00 AM to 5 : 00 PM. This role is based at our central office in Houston. The position may require occasional evening or weekend hours, depending on the needs of the organization.
Compensation :
This is a salary, exempt position with a range of $110,000 - $135,000 / annually commensurate with relevant skills and experience. Benefits include full medical, dental, and vision benefits, paid time off, short-term and long-term disability and 403b retirement plan.
