Position : Document Accessibility Consultant
Department : Publishing
Reports To : Product Owner, UX and Accessibility
Summary : The Document Accessibility Consultant will ensure electronic documents provided to our customers are compliant with accessibility standards : WCAG 2.1 AA and standards related to documents used offline. This individual will be responsible for both document creation and remediation, as well as acting as a subject matter expert to guide others : internally or outside vendor. Close collaboration with Product Owners, Engineering, Design, Editorial, and Production will be essential.
Base pay range : $36.00 / hr - $40.00 / hr
Core Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Electronic PrePress on updates to structural elements and tagging to both legacy and new InDesign files
- Create guidelines and best practices for implementing accessible documents : pre- & post- processing
- Review post export to PDF processing and additional tagging or documents needs to meet accessibility requirements : creating feedback or directly cleaning and fixing documents
- Perform additional tagging of post process exported PDFs as a batch or guide for 3rd party vendors to follow, or possibly update directly to deliver final documents
- Collaborate with, and guide, internal teams and 3rd party vendors in remediating documents (InDesign, PDF, etc.) on a per product basis, while also implementing and communicating best practices
- Participate in, and sometimes lead, working sessions with internal groups and 3rd party vendors : including status meetings
Education, Experience, Skills Required
Hands-on experience creating and evaluating accessible electronic documents including manual testingHands-on experience remediating non-accessible electronic documentsKnowledge of the published technical guidelines from W3C or other sources, best practices and their implementationAbility to properly guide and consult others on process and workflow for accessible documentsProficient with Adobe Creative Suite's InDesign, InCopy, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat ProProficient with InDesign stylesheets and export taggingWorking knowledge of tagging images and content within InDesign layouts to establish reading order and alt text, as well as text and structural elements for a common print & digital sourceExperience with vjoon K4 Publishing SystemAbility to work creatively and effectively within constraintsStrong presentation skills used for presenting internally to other team membersExcellent time management skills and ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environmentNice to have, but not required :Experience in the Educational publishing or technology industries, K-12 focusAccessible document certification (IAAP ADS for example)Experience with accessible interactive web items for building and reviewing games, activities, etc.Seniority level
