Description : Position Overview :
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer II to join our engineering team in Roanoke, Virginia. This role is essential to support the Commercial, Manufacturing, and Field Service teams with innovative designs for fixed and mobile equipment used in the civil explosives industry. The successful candidate will follow designs through the entire lifecycle - working with the Commercial team on concept designs and specifications, Manufacturing on production and sustaining activities, and Field Service to provide comprehensive end-user support. This position is ideal for an engineer with 2-5 years of experience who is ready to contribute to complex equipment design projects.
Key Responsibilities :
Design and Engineering :
- Prepare design calculations, solid models, detailed drafts, and bills of materials (BOMs) for equipment components and assemblies
- Translate engineering concepts into practical parts and assembly designs that meet specifications and performance requirements
- Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to sheet metal fabrication and weldment designs
- Utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA) principles to validate design integrity and performance
Material Selection and Cost Estimation :
Specify raw materials and components based on equipment requirements, performance criteria, and cost considerationsDevelop accurate cost estimates for concept designs to support project planning and budgetingTesting and Validation :
Generate comprehensive test plans to qualify and validate new designsApply mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills under pressure, both on the shop floor and in field environmentsDocumentation and Collaboration :
Compile design review reports and hardware / equipment documentation as necessaryWork collaboratively with Commercial, Manufacturing, and Field Service teams throughout the product lifecycleTravel domestically and internationally (less than 5%) to support product development and Field Service needsRequirements :
Required Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering2-5 years of relevant experience in an engineering / manufacturing environmentProven ability to translate engineering concepts into practical parts and assembly designsFamiliarity with sheet metal fabrication and design of weldments, applying Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principlesWorking knowledge of control theory and mechanical systemsStrong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot under pressure, both on the shop floor and in the fieldCompetency in current CAD software packagesUnderstanding of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) principles and practiceProficiency in Microsoft Office SuiteExcellent administrative, interpersonal, and communication skillsAbility to work as an individual contributor with a team-oriented mindsetPreferred Skills :
Experience in off-highway or heavy equipment design and manufacturingControl theory knowledge with a concentration in off-highway equipment applicationsProficiency in Solid Edge within a Teamcenter PLM environmentHands-on experience with ANSYS or similar FEA softwareKnowledge of civil explosives industry equipment and applicationsWhat We Offer :
