Reporting to the Vice President and Dean of Students, the Director, Campus Safety is responsible for the comprehensive operations of the College’s safety and security programs and services. The Director leads an unarmed, unsworn staff and is responsible for developing, managing, and administering routine and critical incident management response, fire safety training, emergency preparedness training and response, campus safety and crime prevention programming, environmental health and safety, parking management, key / access control programs, and compliance with all applicable local state and federal laws, rules, and regulations related to campus safety and reporting requirements. Works closely with all Student Affairs departments to support student growth holistically through developmental and educational co-curricular programs and services and focus on supporting a culturally diverse and collegial community, residential education programs, mental and physical wellness, spiritual growth, safety, clubs, trips to explore Los Angeles, and opportunities to contribute and share their passions with others. Job Duties 30% - Provide overall leadership and management of the Department of Campus Safety, a 24 / 7 / operation. Responsibilities include the hiring, training, supervision, and direction of departmental staff, ensuring continuous improvement of services in an inclusive, effective, and professional manner. Plan, direct, and evaluate all departmental activities, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and local ordinances. Maintain awareness of best practices and national trends related to safety, security, and legal issues in higher education. - (Essential)

20% - Develop, implement, and monitor the effectiveness of public safety programs, policies, and procedures. Lead the College’s emergency preparedness initiatives and ensure compliance with Clery Act requirements, state and federal regulations, and institutional reporting obligations. Collaborate with law enforcement and external agencies, including maintaining a cooperative relationship with the Northeast Division of the LAPD. - (Essential)

15% - Cultivate strong, inclusive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other College constituents. Promote a safe and secure campus environment through active engagement with the campus and local community using effective community policing and engagement strategies. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support a positive and responsive campus safety culture. - (Essential)

10% - Administer and oversee the departmental budget. Manage resource allocation, staffing costs, and financial planning to support departmental operations. Track, evaluate, and report crime and incident data in compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements. - (Essential)

10% - Plan and coordinate appropriate staffing and security measures for special events to reduce risk and ensure cost-effective use of resources based on the event and venue needs. - (Essential)

10% - Support the Environmental Health & Safety Manager in the planning, implementation, evaluation, and promotion of the College’s environmental health, safety programs, and access control systems for academic and administrative buildings. - (Essential)

5% - Lead efforts to regularly assess and enhance departmental operations, ensuring delivery of best practice safety and security services that are inclusive, responsive, and aligned with the College’s mission and values. - (Essential) Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in police science / administration, law enforcement, safety, or another field related to the position’s responsibilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Seven years of progressively responsible management and / or administrative experience in safety, security, law enforcement, or related field with five years in an administrative role interpreting and implementing policy; skilled conflict management and resolution skills; knowledge of laws, rules, codes and currently accepted principles and practices relevant to safety and security operations in an educational or public facility including OSHA, NFPA, and FEMA NIMS.

Knowledge of laws, applicable civil codes, rules, regulations and contemporary security, safety and policing methods and practices.

Knowledge of contemporary security and safety software packages and administrative information systems.

Ability to manage / secure and ensure the safety of campus facilities.

Demonstrated skill in developing successful working relationships with city, neighborhood, and other community authorities, as well as working with consultants and contractors.

Ability to analyze, synthesize and organize data, and present findings in a comprehensible manner for different audiences.

Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.

Strong commitment to a quality work product.

Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.

Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.

Ability to effectively design, define, describe and document job functions, responsibilities, tasks, and required qualifications associated with supervised positions, and the demonstrated skills in assessing candidates’ experience, knowledge, skills and abilities when hiring for vacant positions, ensuring the best choice of candidate.

Ability to provide employee development, training and opportunities for direct reports to demonstrate performance achievement and success; recognizing performance of both above standards and needs improvement and respond accordingly.

Skilled at communicating feedback verbally, in writing and electronically; and documenting performance via introductory and annual performance appraisals.

Skilled in developing and determining corrective employment / performance / behavioral strategies, as needed.

Demonstrated ability to design and execute performance improvement plans, conducting disciplinary action and / or determining the appropriateness of employment continuation. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in police science, law enforcement, safety or other fields of study related to position responsibilities. EXPECTED HIRING RANGE : $, / yr-$, / yr

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and / or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth. We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
