Casual Corrections Officer - Department of Corrections - Goldendale, WA
Position Details : Non-Exempt, Non-Benefited, Step 1 $24.40 / hr. Open until filled.
Job Summary : Performs activities related to the receipt, booking, custody, transport, and care of inmates under the jurisdiction of the Jail Administrator, following established policies and procedures. Ensures fair treatment of inmates and maintains a safe, secure, and sanitary correctional facility, prioritizing the health, welfare, safety, and security of inmates, staff, and visitors. Positions in this classification are distinguished by their responsibility for inmate care and security.
- Receives and processes incoming inmates, including searches, recording personal articles, reviewing commitment orders, booking, fingerprinting, photographing, and cell placement. Maintains security during inmate movement.
- Inputs and updates data in computer and manual files to generate incident, general, arrest, inmate, and statistical reports, ensuring legal compliance.
- Escorts or supervises custody of inmates during transit to court, hospital, or other facilities, and between correctional institutions.
- Coordinates inmate court appearances, manages related documents, calculates credit time, and updates court-related information in the system.
- Operates control room equipment, monitors surveillance systems, observes inmate and visitor movements, and conducts head counts.
- Performs searches for contraband within the facility and inmates.
- Inspects the facility for security and cleanliness, monitors gauges and alarms.
- Selects trustees for special assignments, supervises their work, and ensures their safety outside the cell block.
- Arranges inmate releases and may assist with work release programs, including verifying employment and logging inmate activities.
- Prepares reports on inmate populations and jail functions.
- Provides inmate care by serving meals, dispensing medications, summoning medical attention, and maintaining medical records.
- Distributes commissary items, records payments, and manages inventory.
- Instructs inmates on jail regulations, enforces rules, and participates in disciplinary proceedings.
- Responds to inquiries and requests from inmates, staff, and the public, providing information or referring as appropriate.
- Maintains supplies and re-stocks as needed.
- Serves warrants, confirms identification of individuals served.
- May provide training or supervision to less experienced officers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : Knowledge of inmate care, custody, control, and law enforcement principles; ability to interpret laws; skill in firearm use; physical ability to handle resisting prisoners; maintain composure under stress; establish effective relationships; communicate effectively; perform essential functions.
Qualifications : Any equivalent combination of education and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical qualification is a high school diploma or G.E.D.
