The Department of Corrections is accepting applications for a Correctional Maintenance Mechanic position at the Maine Correctional Center, Windham, Maine.

This position is essential to the facility's operations and applicants must be willing to participate in stand-by rotation and work holidays and snow days, when necessary. This position is open to DOC employees and all outside applicants.

JOB DESCRIPTION

This is structure and craft work involving the general replacement, upkeep, maintenance and repair of heating, plumbing, appliances, building controls, and buildings. Work includes monitoring resident behavior for security purposes and instructing and overseeing the activities of a resident crew engaged in maintenance and repair tasks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB SUCCESSFULLY :

  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices used in plumbing, welding, electrical, and general maintenance and repair work.
  • Services sewage treatment plant to ensure efficient treatment plant operations.
  • Maintains, operates, and repairs heating and ventilating systems to ensure a comfortable and safe environment.
  • Repairs, maintains, and alters masonry, walls, and woodwork in buildings to ensure structural stability and meet tenant requirements.
  • Repairs and services laundry, kitchen, and woodshop equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation and maximize equipment availability.
  • Maintains hydraulic and mechanical elevators to ensure proper operation.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions needed to perform mechanical repair work.
  • Knowledge of applicable building and safety codes.
  • Knowledge of institutional security policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow manufacturers specifications and instructions for using, cleaning, and repairing machinery and equipment.
  • Ability to use standard power and hand tools.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to apply general carpentry and masonry skills.
  • Ability to perform general machinery repair work.
  • Ability to provide instruction to and plan and direct the work of employees or residents.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow blueprints.
  • Ability to use electrical test equipment such as ohm and voltage meters. Monitors and controls resident behavior to maintain institutional security.
  • Inspects incoming vehicles and institutional shops and cells for contraband and unauthorized materials to seize unauthorized items and maintain institutional security.
  • Oversees and instructs residents working on maintenance projects to ensure work is accomplished correctly and safely.
  • Installs, repairs, and services cell and security door locking devices and constructs security doors and cells to ensure prescribed security levels and measures are maintained.
  • Performs general replacement, upkeep, and repair of heating, plumbing, and electrical fixtures or equipment such as clearing clogged drains, replacing external fixtures, and performing similar tasks to maintain systems.
  • Repairs electrical wiring, fixtures, motors, and communication systems to maintain a safe and functional electrical system.
  • Installs and repairs steam, water, and sewage lines to maintain functional plumbing and heating systems.
  • Repairs and services laundry, kitchen, and woodshop equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation and maximize equipment availability.
  • Cleans, maintains, and services hand tools, machines, equipment and work area daily to comply with safety standards, prolong equipment life, and maintain equipment availability.
  • Operates snow removal equipment to clear walks, driveways, and roads.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Two (2) years' experience in the general maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, mechanical systems, and buildings.

    LICENSING / REGISTRATION / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS (Must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class.)
