Overview
The Air Quality and Climate Division of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation is recruiting a highly motivated individual to join the Air Monitoring section. The Air Monitoring section operates four permanent air monitoring sites across the state of Vermont in Rutland, Bennington, Underhill, and Burlington. These sites are constantly monitoring and sampling for pollutants such as particulate matter, ozone, metals, and VOCs. Our team is responsible for maintaining the various instruments at each site, setting up and recovering samples, performing audits and calibrations, analyzing pollutant and diagnostic data, reporting data to the EPA, and maintaining compliance with federal air monitoring standards.
The primary job responsibilities of this position include sample set-up and recovery, maintenance of air quality monitoring equipment, performance of instrument audits and calibrations, data entry, troubleshooting equipment failures, and analyzing and validating meteorological data.
Candidates should be comfortable driving long distances to visit air monitoring sites, up to 5 hours per day, 2-3 days per week, and attending trainings and conferences with occasional overnight travel. Candidates should also be comfortable climbing ladders, carrying equipment up to 50 lbs., and working outside, occasionally in inclement weather.

Environmental Factors
Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field.
OR
Three (3) years or more of experience in an engineering, environmental, social science, data science, or natural resources field.
