Job description

The Stanford University Department of Pediatrics is committed to advancing the health of infants, children, and adolescents through innovative medical care, research, training, and advocacy. The Department of Pediatrics is comprised of several divisions. The laboratory of Dr. Glaivy Batsuli in the Department of Pediatrics and within the Division of Hematology, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation, and Regenerative Medicine.

The mission of the Batsuli Laboratory is to elucidate mechanisms of the immune response to blood coagulation proteins factor VIII and factor IX, which are deficient in patients with the inherited bleeding disorders hemophilia A and B, in order to devise therapeutics strategies that induce tolerance. Additionally, we seek to understand modifiers of coagulation to better understand mechanisms of bleeding. Our laboratory utilizes basic science and translational methods to pursue various research questions. We prioritize a safe and collaborative environment that fosters multidisciplinary approaches, exchange of ideas, and team science that includes other collaborating scientists, physicians, postdoctoral scholars, technicians, students, and learners at all stages of training.

The Batsuli Laboratory is seeking a Basic Life Research Scientist. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to lead scientific projects, design and execute experiments, perform data analysis, and effectively present data. The individuals will also lead other lab members and trainees in learning lab techniques, execution of experiments, and data analysis. They will work alongside the PI and senior lab members to mentor junior lab members such as postdoctoral scholars and students and other learners at various stages of training. This individual will serve as a leader in the lab by ensuring efficient lab operations, mice colony maintenance, addressing regulatory & administrative requirements, and contributing to the writing of grants, manuscripts, and progress reports in collaboration with the PI. The candidate will also aid with maintenance and utilization of a longitudinal patient sample biobank.

We invite individuals to apply who are passionate about advancing science, demonstrate a track record of scientific productivity, who seek to lead and help grow a laboratory program, want to help shape the training of future scientists & clinicians, and desire to contribute to collaborative scientific investigation that will translate to patient care.

The expected pay range for this position is $80,000 to $90,000 per annum. Stanford University has provided a pay range representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for the position. The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate including equivalent years since their applicable education, field or discipline; departmental budget availability; internal equity; among other factors.

Qualifications (Required) :

  • Contact information for 3 recent references is required. Qualifications (Desired) :
  • Computational biology experience including utilization of single-cell RNA sequencing methods and analysis (i.e., R, Python) is welcomed but not required.
  • Prior experience with principles of coagulation or coagulation-based assays is also welcomed but not required.
  • Previous experience with administrative and regulatory tasks and biorepository / biobanks are desired but not required.

Core Duties :

  • Perform mouse handling, procedures, and colony management.

  • Perform and design complex independent experiments, troubleshoot experiments, maintain detailed records of experiments and data analysis.
  • Develop novel lab assays or methods of experimental execution.
  • Analyze lab data generated (individual data and data of other lab members).
  • Aid in processing samples and managing databases for a patient sample biobank.
  • Formally supervised the training of lab personnel including research technicians, undergraduate student, graduate student, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows. This also includes involvement in hiring and performance evaluation of junior lab members.
  • To lead / execute independent projects, oversee the execution of lab members’ projects, and lead team projects (when applicable).
  • Perform literature review to remain current with research within the field and related research to propose new research directions.
  • Contribute substantially to abstract, grant, grant progress reports, and manuscript submissions.
