Blue Ridge Public Radio (BPR), the nonprofit public media company of Western North Carolina, is searching for a Development Communications Specialist . This role is ideal for a dynamic and motivated communications professional with a strong background in proposal writing, social media fundraising campaigns, and nonprofit outreach. The successful candidate will be highly organized, able to inter-departmentally cross-train and will support BPR’s mission by securing funding through grants, contributing to fundraising initiatives, and developing communications materials. This role requires creativity, attention to detail, care for results, and a passion for the intersection of public media and community engagement.

Qualifications : Experience

  • Proven track record of successfully writing and securing grants from foundations, corporations, and government entities.
  • Deep experience with organic social media campaigns and strategies, including content creation, calls to action and donor engagement.
  • Knowledge of or experience with effective newsletter production for digital fundraising or donor engagement materials is a plus.

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to craft compelling proposals and persuasive / creative communications.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in social media platforms and content creation tools (e.g., Canva, e-newsletter platforms, all socials and similar tools) with a strong sense of AI quality control.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and thrive in a collaborative team environment.
  • Additional Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in grant writing, digital communications, or a related field, preferably in the nonprofit, educational and / or public media sectors. Bachelor’s degree is preferred but will consider ample transferable skill.
  • Familiarity with fundraising software, donor databases, and email marketing platforms.
  • Understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities in the public media sectors with enthusiasm to learn and support on-air pledge drives.
  • Compensation :

    Annual salary range of $54,000-58,000 - Depending on Experience

    Responsibilities

    What you’ll do at BPR

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Grant Writing and Proposal Development (25%)

  • Research, write, submit and manage a portfolio of compelling grant proposals for annual and multi-year funding opportunities in the public media sector as well as among local community partners.
  • Collaborate with program senior leaders to identify funding needs and opportunities.
  • Maintain a calendar of grant deadlines and ensure timely submission of proposals and final reports.
  • Digital Campaign Strategy (25%)

  • In coordination with BPR’s Director of Donor Engagement and BPR’s Audience Engagement Manager, this specialist will develop and manage development and fundraising communications strategies to boost digital and social media visibility for charitable efforts. Must stay up to date on media trends, algorithms and AI changes and reporting tools.
  • Support the creation of graphic collateral, annual reports and stewardship materials for fundraising campaigns.
  • Pledge Drive and Fundraising Initiative Support (20%)

  • Take a lead role in managing collaborative fundraising initiatives, including planning, calendaring, and oversight.
  • Working alongside BPR’s Development team, this specialist will create and deploy digital assets (web tiles, pop-ups, banners etc.) across BPR’s digital platform for improved fundraising performance.
  • Event Coordination and Communications Support (30%)

  • Produce donor-centric newsletters, and other digital content to promote charitable initiatives among contributors.
  • Co-manage, with audience engagement staff, social media accounts with the aim of converting followers into donors and monthly Sustainers.
  • Design, collaborate and report on events that enhance brand awareness.
  • Additional duties include :

  • Represent the BPR by attending functions and participating in speaking engagements
  • Participate in on-air fund drives and team initiatives
  • Work extended hours as needed, including evenings and weekends
  • All other duties as assigned
  • Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in related field OR equivalent work experience

    Physically work in Asheville office (not remote)

    Authorized to work in the US without sponsorship

    Accept a background check to be performed
