Corrections Officer
The Corrections Officer is responsible for maintaining security and overseeing the work and behavior of inmates in a correctional facility. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency / institution policy. Primary responsibilities include supervising the security and conduct of inmates, maintaining perimeter security, performing security checks, maintaining logs for work release inmates, writing incident reports, and escorting inmates to visitations, court, and work assignments. The position also requires attending shift briefings to discuss incidents, problems, and weak points in security, and performing other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and skills required include the ability to manage and de-escalate high-tension situations calmly and effectively, proficiency in monitoring behaviors and identifying potential security risks, and the capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including emergency responses. Quick and sound decision-making in high-stress or emergency situations is also essential. Exercise of self-defense tactics when necessary is part of the role.
Minimum qualifications include the formal education equivalent of a high school diploma. Promotion to the next classification level is at the discretion of the department and the Office of Personnel Management, taking into consideration the employee's demonstrated skills, competencies, performance, workload responsibilities, and organizational needs.
