Department : Digital Fabrication Studio
Status : Days needed each week : Priority is evenings and weekends. Day shift potential. Will work with the student's course schedule; Total estimated hours per week : 5; Expected Duration of Job : One semester
Salary range : $15 / hr
Summary of Job : Studio Monitors help provide daily access to and assistance with operating Digital Fabrication equipment & tools available to all Montserrat students, staff and faculty. Responsibilities are :
Follow opening and closing procedures. Oversee sign-in and sign-out of all individuals using the space and update the studio usage log.
Assist patrons using lab equipment and train patrons new to 3d printing, laser cutter, and vinyl cutting.
Ensure that all patrons follow safety protocols.
Assist with tool maintenance & hand tool checkout, including changing printer filament and resin cartridges. The sewing area is included in the DFS domain, monitors will unlock the sewing cabinet for use during monitor hours.
Monitors occasionally assist the tech with production of campus projects and workshops that take place in the lab.
Studio Monitors may be asked to interact with tour groups, classes, and other visitors to the DFS when these events intersect with their work schedule. The Monitor must be comfortable speaking about the studio, its tools, and the kinds of projects that students are working on in the Digital Fabrication Studio.
Opportunities to run / assist in DFS workshops
Monitors will receive certification / refresher on equipment during required training sessions at the beginning of each semester.
Learning Objectives :
Proficiency of equipment & programs used in DFS such as : 3D printers (PLA & Resin), CNC, laser cutter, vinyl cutter / plotter, knitting machine, sewing machines, 3D scanners, and CAD & CAM software
Diagnose technical problems through minor testing & troubleshooting
Event planning through lab sponsored events / workshops
Teaching experience from instructing certifications with patrons
Necessary Skills : Monitors must be courteous and able to deal effectively and professionally with patrons. Previous customer service, teaching, or retail job experience is preferred. The Digital Fabrication Studio prioritizes inclusivity and the ideal candidate is committed to making the Studio a safe space for all.
Prior experience using the Digital Fabrication Studio equipment is a plus but not required.
Monitors must be capable of working with both Mac and PC operating systems. Experience with Adobe Illustrator is extremely preferred and a working knowledge of basic 3D modeling software or other CAD programs a plus. Candidates MUST be willing to ask questions when they don’t know or understand something. Monitors must feel comfortable enforcing rules and procedures among their peers.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands : Work in a studio setting among hazardous materials such as resin; manual dexterity to use computers and operate fabrication equipment, strength to lift supplies (around 35 lbs). PPE is provided in the lab for working with hazardous materials.
