NOTE : This position can be filled as a Donation Services Coordinator I (DSC) OR a DSC I Work on Weekend (WOW)

Position Summary

The Donation Services Coordinator (DSC I) & DSC WOW (Work on Weekend) will ensure timely on-site

response, assessment, and evaluation of potential organ donors, as well as communicating with

hospital staff to maintain opportunity for donation. The DSC will be responsible for proactive

rounding and early identification of donor referral potential.

Essential Functions

  • Has knowledge of all aspects of LOPA’s organ and tissue referral processes, recovery processes, and procedures, including but not limited to LOPA’s aftercare family support services.
  • Maintains an understanding of LOPA’s clinical triggers and referral criteria. Is able to educate hospital staff on the importance of a timely referral.
  • Responds to referrals, as defined in LOPA policy and procedure.
  • Accesses hospital electronic medical records to review pertinent medical history and clinical course to establish and validate patient suitability for organ donation.
  • Effectively communicate with the appropriate hospital staff, in an acute care setting, regarding the current status of a potential donor, their family’s understanding of prognosis, and the current plan of care. (Donation Assessment Huddle)
  • Effectively communicates pertinent and time sensitive referral information with appropriate LOPA staff.
  • Is able to identify early family support triggers, when GOC or BD exams are planned and notifies appropriate LOPA staff in a timely manner.
  • Is a resource to assigned hospitals for all needs related to organ and tissue donation, maintains a consistent presence in assigned hospitals as required and needed, building and strengthening relationships while addressing any needs.
  • Accesses the donor registry and prints the registry form when applicable.
  • May support donor family throughout flag raising, honor walks, and / or DCD OR with family present.
  • Support onsite rounding and remote organ referral rounding / follow up when regional ORC is managing an active donor case.
  • Utilizes discretion and sensitivity with respect to the circumstances, views and beliefs of others in all interactions, including but not limited to donor families.

  • Maintains effective communication with essential departments within the agency : Quality, HR, Education, Development, Finance and Community.
  • Attends required department meetings, educational opportunities and other relevant meetings.
  • Completes all Q-Pulse and Absorb assignments as required.
  • Maintains usability of all designated EMR access regardless of usage needs.
  • Participates in hospital staff and community education.
  • Participates in at least one community event per year.

    Potential for DSC II with hospital assignment, once trained and competent in DSC I position.

    Work Environment

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, pharmacological agents with the likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
  • Possible mental and visual fatigue associated with detailed work.
  • This position requires travel as needed.
  • This position has possible exposure to Blood-borne Pathogens and TB. Employees may at times be in a hospital setting and may have exposure to packaged organs and tissues for transplant and / or research.
  • Physical Demands

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Communicating with others verbally and electronically to exchange information.

  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and / or fingers.

  • Work Hours - DSC I

  • Full time.
  • Monday-Friday including weekends, nights, and holidays based on regional needs.
  • May be required to work 8 hour or 12-hour shifts0
  • May require call shifts to cover evening, weekend, holidays based on regional staffing needs.
  • Work Hours WOW

  • Full time, 12 hour shifts 11am-11pm- (Shift hours may vary) - 36 worked hours a pay period Compensation- 40 hours a week.
  • Weekend hours - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with Holiday coverage based on regional needs.
  • Weekend program employees are required to work a minimum of 36 hours per week within the defined weekend frame, adjustments may be made due to staffing or Holiday coverage needs.
  • Weekend Program employees will be eligible for weekends off based on the

    departmental staffing needs and their years of service as outlined below.

    1. Employees employed with less than 5 years of service will be eligible for 3

    weekends off per calendar year.

    2. Employees employed for 5 – 9 years of service will be eligible for 4

    weekends off per calendar year.

    3. Employees employed for 10 – 14 years of service will be eligible for 5

    weekends off per calendar year.

    4. Employees employed for 15 or more years of service will be eligible for 6

    weekends off per calendar year.

  • Employees in the weekend program may work other shifts during the week as well as Holidays not on the defined weekend hours.
  • Education and Experience

  • Requires strong organizational skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the flexibility to work odd hours.
  • EMT-P certification or Diploma, associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing or a BS in a medically related field.
  • One to two years related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to communicate lab values and diagnostic procedures.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

  • Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
  • Ability to deliver effective and professional verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding and to solve problems.
  • Ability to be flexible in a dynamic work environment.
