GENERAL SUMMARY :

The Cath Lab and Special Procedures Technologist provides quality cardiovascular diagnostic / intervention services to patients of all ages under medical supervision.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Patient Experience

Identifies opportunities to improve patient experience. Participates in projects / programs designed to enhance service delivery and patient satisfaction.

Patient / Staff / Environmental Safety

Identifies opportunities to improve the Environment of Care, and patient and staff safety. Participates in projects and programs designed to create a safe environment to avoid error.

Technologist Process

Confirms patient identification and obtains clinical history.

Assists physician with performing Cath Lab and Special Procedures diagnostic exams on patients of all levels of acuity according to physician orders and departmental policies and procedures.

In collaboration with Registered Nurse, provides care to the adolescent, adult and geriatric patient and their families. Whenever applicable, demonstrates understanding of the needs of specific age groups in terms of their physical and motor development, psychosocial development and intellectual / language development.

Ensures proper dispositions of patients before and after procedure including, but not limited to, placing of electrodes, defib pads, NIBP, invasive pressure systems, SAO2, etc.

Displays open, clean, concise and professional intra-procedural communication with all care providers regarding care of the patient.

Possesses a thorough knowledge of equipment including set-up and function.

Assists physicians in the scrub role according to prescribed standards.

Sets up and establishes sterile table complete with all required supplies and instrumentation.

Performs additional duties within the department such as patient charging, scheduling, supply stocking, etc.

Follows all hospital radiation safety regulations to ensure patient and personal safety.

Assists physicians in the monitoring role as a technologist within the Cath Lab.

Possesses complete working knowledge of applicable computer systems.

Documents appropriate information pertaining to the pre-procedural process.

Completes other project duties as assigned.

Assists the physician in the x-ray role in Cath Lab / Special Procedures.

Appropriately instructs and evaluates radiologic technology students as requested.

Assures the acquisition of a maximally diagnostic exam through manipulation of the radiologic parameters.

Is responsible for the use and care of all equipment and the reporting of equipment malfunctions.

Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of both sterile and basic surgical techniques.

Demonstrates an understanding of blood sample gathering, preparation and handling.

Performs all radiological aspects in the special procedures environment.

Serves as an expert resource in the use of ionizing radiation. This resource ensures proper use of the radiation and serves as a working leader to follow all hospital radiation safety regulations to ensure patient and personal safety.

Professional Development

Attends department meetings, mandatory in services and other continuing education offerings.

Supervises functions delegated to students.

Contributes to the department's fiscal management by appropriate use of human and material resources.

Supports unit and division committees, task forces and project activities.

Participates in quality improvement activities and incorporates recommendations into practice.

Contributes to the learning experience of students, orientees and staff.

Maintains quality standards, i.e., safety, hazardous waste and infection control.

Maintains professional education requirements as defined by State of WI Department of Regulation and Licensing.

Department Specific Accountabilities

Maintains department specific accountabilities as determined, maintained, and housed within each unit's Scope of Service.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

Education

Knowledge of radiological standards and procedures normally acquired through completion of a diploma from an approved AMA school of radiological technology, an Associate's Degree in Radiology, or other manner to meet requirements of the ARRT and State of Wisconsin Radiographer licensure.

Experience

Minimum of one year working full time in Diagnostic Radiology necessary to enhance and develop skills, with previous experience in Cath Lab / Special Procedures.

Required

Possesses State of Wisconsin Radiographer license.

Current BLS certification or obtained within 90 days of hire - All clinical personnel in identified job codes are required to maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) training through independent study, online manikin and knowledge testing. An acceptable training program is the Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Provider course from the American Heart Association or the client Professional Rescuer Program with AED. (See Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training Policy).

Other

Possesses and maintains active ARRT (R) Certification desired.

ACLS certification beneficial.

Possesses an in-depth knowledge of Cath Lab monitoring systems.

Possesses complete and thorough understanding of the operation of all patient monitors including EKG, invasive pressure, NIBP, SAO2, etc.

Possesses a thorough understanding of EKG rhythm.

Possesses a working knowledge of both hospital and department specific computer systems.

Annual Competencies

Annual competencies as required by Aspirus and / or various regulatory agencies based on entity and / or job position.
