A Brief Overview

Responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of direct care to assigned neonatal patients with complex health care needs in inpatient areas. Works in an environment requiring continual response to dynamic patient acuity changes with rapidly changing nursing care responsibilities. NICU RNs provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.

What You Will Do

Attends high-risk deliveries

Cares for infants transitioning to extra uterine life

Provides age and culturally appropriate care to patient

Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans

Provides nutritional assessment & specialized feedings

Changes dressings, inserts catheters, starts IVs

Provides arterial & intravenous therapy

Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, such as incubators and ventilators, monitors, and other life-sustaining treatment

Prepares and administers and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments

Monitors vital signs and initiates corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology, communicates patient’s condition to care team

Assists treating physician during examination, treatment and procedures, which can include life-saving situations

Instructs and educates patient’s family

Participates in discharge planning

Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms

Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting

Float among pediatric and newborn clinical services, where qualified and competent

Delivers patient care in accordance with the ANA Scope and Standards of Care and Practice, Patient Bill of Rights and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.

Delivers patient care in accordance with specialty specific standards (e.g. Oncology Nurses Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses) as appropriate

Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the patient plan of care according to changing health care needs.

Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates patient teaching using appropriate education resources and evaluates the effectiveness of the teaching.

Models effective leadership skill through role modeling, mentoring and effective communication. Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned.

Directly delegates and supervises the practice of ancillary staff (LPN’s, PCA’s, Tech’s, Unit Secretaries, etc.) and is knowledgeable of the tenets of the NJ Scope of Practice guidelines.

Supports a professional practice environment by functioning as a role model and resource person and also functions as a preceptor for nursing staff and participates in the orientation of other unit employees.

Participates in unit-based and organization-wide activities, committees and community activities as appropriate

Identifies own learning needs with respect to nursing practice and pursues educational support to meet these needs.

Routinely utilizes Evidence Based Practice literature, policy and procedure manuals and other available reference materials to ensure consistency and accuracy in the delivery of care.

Participates actively in the Performance Improvement process to evaluate the quality of nursing care delivered to patients

Other Responsibilities :

Completes required orientation as directed by facility

Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment

Respects cultural and religious practices of patients

Upholds HIPAA regulations

Punctual and dependent for assigned / confirmed shifts

Uses medical equipment, including incubators, feeding tubes, and oxygen hoods.

Follows neonatology guidelines, regulations, and standards.

Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.

Education Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required

Bachelor's Degree BSN preferred

Experience Qualifications

Minimum of one (1) year NICU experience required

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Excellent attention to detail

Critical-thinking and problem-solving skills :

Neonatal physiology and disease knowledge - Understanding premature babies' developing systems, common conditions, and management.

Making quick decisions in emergency scenarios.

Ability to work under pressure

Familiarity with NICU equipment :

Technology proficiency - Expertly operating complex NICU equipment like ventilators, monitors, IVs.

Strong verbal and written communication skills :

Explaining complex issues clearly to families.

Providing emotional support to families under stress.

Fine motor skills

Visual acuity- Keen observation - Detecting subtle changes in an infant's condition requiring intervention.

Licenses and Certifications

RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and / or Compact State Licensure Current NJ License upon hire required and

BCLS - Basic Life Support through American Heart Association upon hire required and

PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support through American Heart Association upon hire required or

NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation upon hire required

RNC-NIC - Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing upon hire preferred or

CCRN - Critical Care Registered Nurse (Adult, Neonatal, and Pediatric Acute) NICU specialty upon hire preferred

STABLE - Neonatal Certification upon hire preferred

Pay Range : $50.00 / hour - $62.50 / hour
