PRIMARY PURPOSE

Responsible for the daily management of assigned unit to include staff supervision and development, planning, budget, quality, and facility operations and coordinating patient services to ensure high quality patient care and optimal outcomes.

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS

Education

  • Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.

Experience

  • Must have four years of professional nursing experience.

  • Must have Peritoneal Dialysis experience within the last 2 years prior to hire
  • Must be familiar with CMS and Texas Administrative Codes regarding ESRD and Dialysis regulations
  • Certification / Registration / Licensure

  • Must have current, valid RN license or temporary RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing, or valid Compact RN license
  • Must have current healthcare provider CPR course completion card from one of the following :
  • American Heart Association
  • American Red Cross

  • Must have certification in Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) or Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN)

  • Must have and maintain a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) or Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification or Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN)

  • Must have SAMA certification, levels 1-4 before first clinical orientation shift and no later than 30 days upon hire or placement in the role.

  • Provides care to assigned patient population in accordance with the current State of Texas Nurse Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary plan of care, and clinical area specific standards.
  • Must be capable of serving as a clinical resource for staff.
  • Must demonstrate advanced knowledge of assigned department operations including policies, personnel and budget management.
  • Must have effective verbal and written communication skills in working with a diverse population of physicians, patients, nursing staff, management and administration.
  • Must be capable of leadership and have effective organization skills.
  • Must demonstrate patient centered / patient valued behaviors.
  • Trauma Managers :
  • Provides care to assigned patient population in accordance with the current State of Texas Nurse Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary plan of care, and clinical area specific standards.
  • Must be able to demonstrate an expert knowledge of all phases of trauma care to include prevention, pre-hospital care, resuscitation, stabilization, supportive care, rehabilitation, organ / tissue routine inquiry, and disaster management.
  • Must have highly effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be capable of being on-call in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to respond back to the facility within one hour.
  • Must be able to complete statistical reports, data analysis, and risk adjustment analysis.
  • Must have advanced pc skills in MSWord, Excel, and other programs to assist with reports.
  • Must be able to motivate and train assigned staff. - Must demonstrate patient centered / patient valued behaviors.
  • Responsibilities

    1. Responsible for managing daily unit activities to ensure high quality patient care and optimal outcomes. Communicates with physicians, social work and other department staff to promote integrated, effective care. Serves as patient advocate, follows up on patient care issues and outcomes, oversees / arranges discharge support. Documents and supervises unit / patient information including charts, surveys, reports, research, correspondence, statistics and quarterly reports to ensure efficient, accurate data.

    2. Selects, trains, supervises, motivates and evaluates assigned staff. Assesses patient needs and staff capabilities, scheduling staff to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities, while providing optimal service to internal and external customers. Ensures assigned staff receive opportunities to further their knowledge. Serves as a role model and resource. Evaluates staff competencies and delegates tasks effectively. Directs staff meetings, interviews, trains, counsels and provides other personnel activities to ensure that clinical activities meet department and Parkland goals and mission objectives.

    3. Serves as a clinical resource, maintains skills and promotes staff development. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in the specialty area by attending seminars or workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations and maintaining Texas RN licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices. Serves as an educational resource for patients, families and Parkland staff. Responsible for maintaining Nursing Standards and Practices on the unit.

    4. Responsible for establishing and maintaining effective unit procedures. Develops and evaluates staff activities to promote knowledge of all rules, regulations, policies, procedures, laws and guidelines, including The Joint Commission, that impact the unit and ensures compliance. Collaborates with Directors, Quality / Risk Management and Nursing Administration. Maintains communication on hospital wide practices through committee participation.

    5. Responsible for a collaborative work team to ensure positive working relationships. Communicates effectively with physicians, students, and other departments such as Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, Environmental and Linen Services. Maintains good communication with other hospitals, government / regulatory agencies and community representatives.

    6. Responsible for performance improvement practices on the unit. Collaborates with staff, physicians, administration and risk management to evaluate and improve patient services. Identifies and analyzes the design of jobs, work processes and flows in the unit and implements appropriate changes to improve effectiveness, productivity and efficiency that support the overall goals of the department and Parkland.

    7. Responsible for effective facility management as measured by cleanliness, proper type, amount and functioning of equipment and overall environmental safety. Oversees timely and effective maintenance of equipment and rooms. Responsible for space planning, including renovations, capital repairs and acquisitions. Ensures informed use of department resources through clear policies including equipment, supplies, personnel hiring / training practices and service utilization. 8. Develops and administers the annual budget (capital, operating and payroll) to ensure that the unit has the necessary funds to carry out established goals and objectives. Monitors charges and supplies, initiates order, requisitions and supervises capital improvements.

    9. Develops, implements and evaluates unit annual goals and personal goals consistent with Parkland and Department mission and goals.

    10. Serves on multidisciplinary and Departmental committees as selected and assigned.

    11. Trauma Managers a. Responsible for management of the Trauma Nurse Clinicians regarding their performance, the Trauma Systems performance, and overall trauma outcomes. Selects, trains, motivates, supervises, and evaluates assigned staff to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities, while providing optimal service to both internal and external customers. Monitors staffing levels, adjusts schedules, and completes Time and Attendance sheets. Ensures that Trauma staff maintain knowledge and competencies, arranging for appropriate professional development activities. Educates PHHS staff through in-service presentations and lectures at least six times a year. Educates assigned staff regarding Nursing Administration procedures, trauma protocols, and other issues that impact Trauma Center designation and trauma funding. b. Coordinates and assists with the day-to-day activities of the Trauma staff, serving as primary system resource to coordinate, facilitate and enhance the service levels for all admitted trauma patients. Anticipates patient and system needs, defines complications, coordinates care to expedite hospital discharge, and ensures optimal care and utilization of PHHS resources. Ensures that trauma patients are evaluated daily, and that appropriate measures are initiated and properly documented. c. Responsible for patient identification / family notification, and all trauma documentation, trauma registry data extraction, injury description, injury scoring, and completion of surveillance forms to ensure effective operations. Completes insurance and -crime victim- referral forms as needed. d. Communicates system needs to the trauma service product line managers, attending physicians, residents, support services staff, patients / family, and the external patient support services. Provides follow-up for transferring facilities. Provides management, system, and clinical back-up response for the Trauma program. Maintains positive working relationship with management, Trauma faculty, other hospitals and PHHS employees to ensure effective communication and cooperative working relationships. e. Assists in research, community injury prevention programs, trauma outreach activities, and provides disaster coverage with the team to ensure efficient, effective operations. f. Identifies and analyzes the design of jobs, work processes and flow for the Trauma Services Department and suggests or implements appropriate changes to improve work effectiveness, productivity and efficiency that support the overall goals of PHHS and the department. Assists staff with identification, follow-up and documentation of all Trauma Performance Improvement Process issues. Presents improvement issues, completes weekly / monthly / quarterly reports, and reviews / critiques resuscitation videos daily. Analyzes and trends patient complications and other information to ensure continuous performance improvement. g. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Trauma Department. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state / federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Guarantees that regulatory guidelines are in place to ensure JCAHO accreditation and Trauma Center designation. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding. h. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in the field of Trauma Management by attending seminars / workshops, reading professional journals, and actively participating in professional organizations such as the Society of Trauma Nursing and Texas Trauma Coordinators forum. Maintains Texas RN license and certification for CCRN, CEN, ACLS, ATCN, and TNCC. Maintains instructor licensure in TNCC and ATCN. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices. i. Attends multidisciplinary rounds and departmental / institutional committees, the Trauma Performance Improvement meeting, and Trauma conference meetings.
