Distinguishing Features of the Class

Attachments must be in PDF format. Part-time position. Open until filled or 9 / 30 / 2025, whichever comes first. Primary reason why classification exists : Performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in the repair, maintenance, construction and care of parks, city grounds, cemetery and facilities of the City.

An employee in this class performs a variety of activities in the maintenance and repair of City property, grounds and facilities performing building and grounds maintenance work as assigned. Work involves minor electrical, plumbing and construction duties. Work is supervised by the General Services Supervisor and is evaluated on the basis of attaining stated individual objectives, quantity and quality of work, compliance with safety regulations, community feedback, and responsiveness to requests or complaints.

Illustrative Examples of Work

  • Performs general grounds maintenance work in municipal parks, cemetery, and city property.
  • Repairs and maintains park equipment and buildings; paints facilities and buildings.
  • Performs minor plumbing, masonry, carpentry and electrical work.
  • Picks up trash and garbage and disposes of same; empties trash containers.
  • Cleans and maintains administrative and recreational buildings.
  • Maintains and cleans gymnasium floors; strips and waxes as needed.
  • Notifies supervisor of any safety concerns of park grounds or recreational facilities.
  • Prepares fields for play; drags and marks off fields.
  • Operates lawn mowers, weed eaters, trucks, and tractors during grounds maintenance.
  • Operates mowers, blowers, weed eaters, metal detector, chainsaws and a variety of hand tools; mows grass and trims bushes, hedges, and trees; rakes and removes leaves; mulches planting areas; waters flowers and shrubs
  • Picks up litter; fertilizes and sows grass; plants flowers, shrubs, and trees; installs borders around shrubs and flowerbeds
  • Operates chainsaw, pole saw, weed trimmer, hedge trimmer to trim, cut and remove limbs and vines obstructing signs at intersections
  • Operates paint machine to paint traffic markings, directional arrows, stop bars, crosswalks and parking lines
  • Operates sign post puller; erects new or replaces old or damaged street signs
  • Maintains records for cemetery, maps grave registrations, lays out and marks grave sites, re-fills sunken graves
  • Opens and closes parks; checks restrooms, re-stocks supplies, cleans
  • Assists in the set-up of rooms for special program or activities.
  • Uses department's software programs as related to division's tasks
  • May be required to work outside normal work hours in an emergency or on-call basis.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance of recreational property, city property and facilities.
  • General knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the general construction and maintenance of buildings.
  • General knowledge of safety precautions and regulations, and occupational hazards.
  • Skill in the use and care of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Ability to operate and maintain mowing equipment, tractors, and small hand tools; ability to operate leaf blowers, weed eaters, and other equipment
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied working conditions and to walk and stand for long periods of time; ability to be work overtime and weekends if required.
  • Ability to perform manual labor tasks such as seeding, disbursing straw, fertilizing, mowing, shoveling, raking, and erecting proper signage.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Physical Requirements

    Work in this class is defined as heavy work requiring physical exertion of in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employee has to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling talking, and hearing. Employee must have the visual acuity to visually inspect small defects or parts, operation or inspection of machines and earth moving equipment, use measurement devices, and to determine the neatness and accuracy of work assigned. Employee must have the stamina to work for extended periods some of which in emergency situations.

    Working Conditions

    Work is performed primarily in outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold with snow and ice. Employee is subject to noise which may cause the employee to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Employee is subject to vibration, such as exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body and is also subject to workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or exposure to chemicals, atmospheric conditions, oils, fuels, biting and stinging insects, and animals. Employee must wear hearing / visual protection while performing most field work and may be exposed to blood borne pathogens requiring specialized personal protective equipment.

    Graduation from high school or equivalent

    Experience

    Some experience in general maintenance of facilities and buildings

  • Valid North Carolina driver's license
  • Flagger training within six months of hire
