Water And Sewer Technician

Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties involved in the maintenance, repair, installation, and construction of the water distribution and sewer collection pipeline system and associated areas. Assists and performs work in the installation, maintenance and repair of water and sewer pipelines, services, appurtenances, fire hydrants, and other system facilities.

Essential Job Functions :

1. Install, service, and repair water and sewer lines, including mains, laterals, valves, fittings, hydrants, and backflow prevention devices.

2. Diagnose and repair service leaks and operate main line valves and hydrants.

3. Dig trenches for the installation of utility infrastructure.

4. Operate pneumatic, hand, and powered tools to perform installations and repairs.

5. Collect water meter readings and replace, repair, or rebuild meters and related collection equipment.

6. Complete service orders for activating / deactivating water services and testing water meters.

7. Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair stormwater grates and pump systems.

8. Operate heavy equipment and machinery (e.g., backhoes, trucks, sewer cleaners) in a safe and efficient manner.

9. Operate dump trucks to transport materials such as debris, mud, and backfill to and from work sites.

10. Enter confined spaces in accordance with MIOSHA standards to inspect or repair water / sewer systems.

11. Use underground locator devices to mark existing utility infrastructure (pipes, valves, manholes).

12. Read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, system diagrams, and work orders to guide work.

13. Perform maintenance tasks to ensure the continued operation of water and sewer lines.

14. Repair valve boxes, tap water mains, monitor chlorine residuals, collect water samples, and inspect / clean sewer lines and manholes.

15. Conduct CCTV survey inspections of sewer systems.

16. Perform regular sanitary manhole inspections (weekly / monthly).

17. Conduct acoustic inspections on the sewer collection system.

18. Repair and rebuild manholes and related underground structures.

Other Responsibilities :

1. Respond to customer questions or concerns and refer them to the appropriate supervisor.

2. Perform landscaping or site restoration duties as needed following excavation or utility work.

3. Perform other duties as assigned or required to support department operations.

Minimum Qualifications :

1. High school diploma / GED.

2. One year of working experience.

3. You must possess a valid State of Michigan driver's license with five or fewer points and a satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

4. Must obtain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) within 90 days of employment.

5. CDL shall have a group A or B designation / Air Brake and Tanker (N) Endorsements.

6. CDL shall remain current throughout course of employment.

Additional Information / Requirements :

1. Must be able to lift and carry heavy, bulky tools, equipment and other items weighing in excess of 50 pounds.

2. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, fluids, bodily waste and other materials.

3. Must be able to work in all weather conditions.

4. Physical agility and mobility are required to work on uneven ground, in construction areas, trenches of various depths, and subterranean structures.

5. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the operation and use of motorized vehicles and other equipment.

6. Frequently exposed to risks associated with traffic and moving vehicles.

7. Ability to critically assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and emergency situations.

8. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and to understand and carry out oral instructions.

9. Assist in the training of others in the safe operation of tools and equipment.

10. Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgement, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with employees, project contractors, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, other township administrators, and the public.

11. Ability to respond to emergency situations at irregular hours.

12. Must be willing to work overtime, evenings, and / or weekends to resolve customer problems and / or perform emergency maintenance or repairs of the water distribution and sewer collection system.

13. Employees must be able to respond to emergency calls to perform duties included but not limited to; operational problems, equipment, emergencies, storms, power outages and other emergencies deemed necessary by management after normal working hours, weekends and holidays.

Knowledge / Skills :

Demonstrate ability of plumbing repair, maintenance and inspection practices and principles. Basic construction techniques.

Accurately complete required work orders, collect and input data.

Demonstrate ability with the principles and techniques of vehicle and equipment operation and general maintenance and repair.

Demonstrate ability with the application and use of a variety of hand tools, construction equipment and other tools and materials.
