About the Role

Director, Assistant General Counsel - Business Core. We are seeking an experienced and collaborative legal leader to join our TechReg Legal team as the lead legal partner for the Business Core tower of the Customer Identity and Core team (CIC). The CIC team manages the enterprise system of record for millions of customers, enabling access to digital experiences and protecting critical customer account information at high security levels. This role partners with Product, Engineering, and Design to provide clear, practical legal advice that supports innovation while navigating a complex regulatory landscape. You will work on product counseling, issues management, and events.

What you’ll do

Be a strategic thought partner and advisor : Provide proactive, business-minded legal advice to senior product leaders on the evolution of the Business Core. You’ll work on cross-line projects to understand purposes, the full legal landscape, and how to apply the law to business initiatives.

Translate the law : Act as the subject matter expert on regulatory issues. Understand the business, customers (small business, commercial), technology, and regulatory requirements, and translate between business intent and legal guardrails. Communicate legal requirements to the business and business requirements to legal specialists.

Quarterback : Serve as the legal point person for your area with a defined scope. Own legal issues, including drafting product terms, reviewing marketing collateral, and interfacing with business leaders, with support from the Legal Team.

Build scalable solutions : Help build processes, playbooks, and training materials that enable product teams to move quickly and confidently.

Some examples of tasks you would be responsible for :

Reviewing product feature changes for regulatory compliance by meeting with business partners, identifying legal obligations or risks, and providing recommendations to manage legal risk (e.g., revising user-facing content, drafting product terms and disclosures, and assisting with strategic partnership integrations).

Performing legal research on application of existing and new laws to novel technology implementations, developing legal theories, and influencing business strategy and decisions.

You are comfortable being the go-to expert on complex legal topics and can explain intricate concepts clearly. You have a passion for technology, a desire to own your work, and a collaborative spirit. You are familiar with B2B nuances and eager to learn new areas of law.

Basic Qualifications

Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

Active member in good standing of at least one state bar

At least 5 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, government, military judge advocate, or in-house counsel

At least 5 years of experience in a small business or commercial law practice

Preferred Qualifications

8+ years of experience as a practicing attorney focused on small business or commercial law

8+ years of experience in an in-house role or combined law firm and in-house experience supporting ecommerce, mobile apps, payments, or software products

Strong written and oral communication skills

Ability to build strong relationships across teams

This role is hybrid : associates spend 3 days per week in-person at one of our offices listed on this posting. Fridays are enterprise-wide virtual work days. Monday–Thursday are optional for in-person days to collaborate in team spaces.

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based on hours worked. McLean, VA : $226,000 - $257,900 for Director, Asst General Counsel. Candidates hired in other locations will be paid according to that location’s pay range and the offer letter will reflect the actual amount.

This role is eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and / or long-term incentives (LTI).
