CIO Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the hospital CEO in a concerted effort to help set, and manage, critical information technology strategies for the organization
  • Must focus beyond just technology and act as "keeper of information resources."
  • Drive the operational strategies of the organization and, while acting in a capacity where the CIO is running technology operations, also be responsible for making sure the technology works.
  • Act as a key leader who contributes to the overall organizational strategy, and not just technology initiatives and operations activities.
  • Learn clinical operations in order to deploy clinical solutions.
  • Think strategically four or five years down the road.
  • Serve as a link between technology and the physician / nursing staff.
  • Focus on how technology works in the context of the business of healthcare.
  • Achieve a prudent balance between the business aspects and the technology aspects of healthcare.
  • Make a business case for the technology components the organization needs to qualify as a "meaningful user" of EHR technology and secure the reimbursement offered in the stimulus package.
  • Be fluent in the language of the CFO CIOs and IT staff today must know how to speak the language of finance.
  • Obtain, implement, or support the best clinical technology for patients, but do not ignore the ROI of large technology purchases.
  • Manage IT budget decisions, including difficult cuts in IT spending in accordance with current economic conditions and realities in your marketplace.
  • When constructing business cases for health information technology, know how to calculate total cost of ownership including licensing fees, hardware, support, and any related development costs.

Also know cost of training and what impact changing the workflow will have on physicians and nurses.

Identify and lead an organization through initial learning curves and initial (temporary) declines in productivity related to implementing new systems and technologies.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Business or Healthcare Administration or Information Technology.
  • 5+ years senior-level experience in hospital information systems management as CIO or CTO.
  • Extensive clinical, healthcare consulting or healthcare information technology backgrounds related to implementation and management if technology assets and staff.

Experience in overseeing and delivering business solutions implementation in a hospital environment is a must.

  • Understanding of the full project life cycle including skills related to budgeting, strategic planning, and working with executive boards and heads of departments within large healthcare facilities.
  • Capable of monitoring, directing, and overseeing progress of team leads involved in various projects related to redesign, build, test and deployment of new business processes to facilitate integration of new system functionality.
  • Previous Hospital Information System experience with McKesson, EPIC, Eclipsys, Cerner, Quadramed, Meditech, or similar vendors.
  • Awareness of, and ability to ensure adherence to, modern security-related aspects and requirements of maintaining data confidentiality and security including mandated compliance requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
