Job Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician I assists physicians in performing diagnostic testing, patient examinations, education, and treatment within the Eye & Laser department. This position ensures efficient clinic flow, supports high-quality patient care, and maintains compliance with clinical and safety standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments relevant to the role.
Adheres to infection-control, medication administration, and controlled substance regulations.
Participates in continuous quality improvement activities.
Maintains compliance with organizational policies, department protocols, and applicable regulatory standards.
Protects patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
Demonstrates exceptional customer service and professionalism consistent with the organization’s Vision, Mission, and Values.
Adheres to The Joint Commission (TJC) and other accrediting body standards.
CORE Duties
Escorts patients to exam rooms, obtains detailed medical history, and confirms the reason for visit.
Performs initial testing such as visual acuity, extraocular movement, pupil assessment, and blood pressure measurement as indicated.
Administers pupil dilation drops and other medications as directed.
Communicates pertinent patient history and findings to the physician, including changes in visual acuity or intraocular pressure.
Assists with in-office procedures including chalazion excisions, refractions, and tear duct probes.
Accurately documents exam findings and treatments in patient charts.
Educates patients regarding physician instructions, eye drops, medications, and surgical preparation or follow-up.
Coordinates and schedules surgical procedures, including communication with surgical centers, patient preparation, and consent forms.
Schedules referrals and consultations with other physicians as directed.
Orders contact lenses, writes prescriptions, and authorizes medication refills per physician instruction.
Maintains current knowledge of ICD-10 diagnostic codes, CPT procedure codes, and third-party billing requirements.
Ensures proper operation, cleaning, and maintenance of ophthalmic equipment and supplies.

Performs refractions and contact lens fittings as directed by the physician.
