Job description

Chaminade College Preparatory seeks a dynamic, innovative, and engaging MOCK TRIAL COACH AND MODERATOR to lead our high school Mock Trial program. This is a part-time position.

The successful candidate will possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to lead and award-winning Mock Trial Program which promotes understanding and appreciation of the law, court procedures, and the American judicial system.

Team Goals

  • Develops students' life skills, such as critical thinking, reading, speaking, and advocacy.
  • Heightens students' appreciation for the principle of equal justice for all.
  • Promotes students' awareness of current legal issues.
  • Promotes the exchange of ideas among students.
  • Mock Trial Season runs September through end of December.
  • Scheduling demands include regular weekly and weekend class meetings

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitates student understanding of witness statements and the legal system in order to present both the plaintiff and defense sides in a court of law.
  • Writes direct exams, cross-examinations, opening statements, closing arguments, and rebuttals.
  • Teaches Rules of Evidence including objections used and allowed in Mock Trial cases.
  • Supervises students during practices and competitions.
  • Schedules activities and makes necessary arrangements for practices, car pools, meals, clothing requirements and logistics of competitions in downtown Los Angeles, Stanley Mock Court House.
  • Responsible for the selection process of roles for the Junior Varsity Mock Trial team.
  • Maintains relationships with local judges, attorneys and other school coaches to build a Mock Trial culture and competes in scrimmages.
  • Maintains a variety of documents including attendance records for rehearsals, permission slips, and field trip paperwork.
  • Qualifications

  • Prior experience leading a Mock Trial program desired.
  • Prior experience working with students in a Catholic school environment desired.

    Salary and Benefits

    This is an hourly part-time position. The salary for this position will be commensurate with experience. This position is not eligible for Chaminade's employee benefits package.
