Description
The Transmission Planning Consultant will utilize knowledge in electrical transmission planning and application of grid technologies to assess grid performance and prepare the grid for future challenges, including plant retirements and renewable integration. The role involves performing a broad range of transmission and operational studies, providing consulting services, and supporting clients with business and engineering analysis. The consultant will contribute to technical studies and collaborate with project managers to execute projects effectively.
- Conduct transmission planning and operational studies such as power flow, transient stability, transfer capability, short-circuit, voltage, harmonics, electromagnetic, reliability, and economic dispatch related to congestion management scenarios.
- Evaluate regulatory conditions and risks by applying NERC, FERC, and regional requirements, policies, procedures, production costing, risk assessment techniques, TPL compliance, and generator interconnection principles.
- Execute transmission system planning studies independently using industry software like PSS / E, PSLF, EMTP / ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod.
- Evaluate, select, adapt, and modify standard engineering techniques for electric transmission planning procedures and criteria.
- Analyze data and interpret engineering, financial, and economic conditions, assessing their implications for client projects.
- Assess life-cycle costs by developing assumptions related to capital, operation, maintenance, performance, and economic forecasts.
- Perform technical and business risk assessments considering regulatory impacts.
- Develop detailed financial analyses using appropriate software.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations summarizing analysis results.
- Create client presentations, engineering reviews, financial analyses, and manage contract administration for utility system planning.
- Assist project managers with business development, including proposal development and client relationship management.
- Support various business lines as required by clients.
- Perform other duties as assigned and ensure compliance with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program, with 3 years of related experience, orMaster's Degree in Engineering or Business with 2 years of experience, orPhD in Engineering with 1 year of experience.Additional requirements include experience with electric utility operations, planning, or consulting; proficiency with industry software; knowledge of power regions and ISOs; understanding of NERC / FERC standards; and strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills. A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
