Recreation Specialist
PRIMARY FUNCTION / PURPOSE :
The Recreation Specialist is responsible for planning, organizing, and conducting recreational activities for clients and their children in the temporary shelter. This individual is responsible for working with clients at our location in the Bronx, NY.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
- High School Diploma (or GED) is required
- Must successfully complete the 2 hour Mandated Reporter training course ( Can be completed upon hire)
- At least 6 months of relevant work experience is required
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends when necessary
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills and an outgoing / cheerful disposition
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must be computer literate in Microsoft-Office
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES :
Act as a liaison between the site and community-based recreational resourcesDevelop, coordinate, and facilitate activities for families in the temporary shelter, including but not limited to homemaking, healthy eating, shopping on a budget, financial empowerment, etc.Develop linkages with external recreational programs and facilitiesOrganize trips for the clients and their childrenPlan and organize special facility eventsCoordinate attendance for holiday celebrations offered in the community and by DHSWork with community providers / institutions in the development of recreational opportunities for clients, (i.e., Big Buddy programs, PAL, Big Brothers / Big Sisters), students, and othersMaintain contact with museums, theaters, sports teams, and other cultural programs and activities to facilitate awareness and attendance of special events for clientsEscort families to all events to ensure a safe and structured environment for all in attendanceOrganize and coordinate parent / escort volunteer groupsManage time effectively and coordinate program activities accordinglyCoordinate transportation services to and from all special events with CCS, DHS, and / or others as neededMaintain and submit logs of all activities (completed and upcoming)Other assignments and tasks may be added at the discretion of the Program DirectorAssist in identifying housing resources and leads for families in shelterOTHER REQUIREMENTS (including Physical Demands) :
