Role Overview

The Weights and Measures Inspector serves as an inspector within the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) Weights and Measures department. The position performs inspections on commercial weighing and measuring devices as well as fuel dispensing systems throughout the state. The role is responsible for conducting routine inspections and responding to consumer complaints of concerns related to accuracy and / or safety. The position also inspects packages for correct net contents and assures compliance with State and federal laws protecting consumers. The Weights and Measures Inspector utilizes education and field training to carry out their role. The inspector also supports city, county, and other designated weights and measures entities to accomplish training goals. This position requires considerable travel within the state utilizing State vehicles to include, but not limited to, operating large trucks and transport trailers. This is a field-based position covering the southwest area of Indiana. Applicants from Sullivan, Knox, Daviess, Martin, Gibson, Pike, Dubois, Posey, Vanderburgh, Warrick, Spencer, or Perry counties will be considered.

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life :

The essential functions of this role are as follows :

  • Perform and schedule inspections throughout the state on the accuracy of weighing and measuring equipment.
  • Approve or condemn weighing and measuring devices based on inspection reports.
  • Prepare reports on daily inspections and review reports for administrative / regulatory action.
  • Assist in the Metrology Laboratory calibrating equipment or comparing field standards of weight, length, or volume to state standards.
  • Conduct special investigation pertinent to weights and measures.
  • May serve as an expert witness in hearing and in court.
  • Read blueprints, data, manuals, or other materials to determine specifications, inspection and testing procedures, adjustment methods, certification processes, formulas, or measuring instruments required.
  • May conduct public information and education programs within the state.
  • Write test or inspection reports describing results, recommendations, or needed repairs.
  • Clean, maintain, calibrate, or repair measuring instruments or test equipment.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance program from state issued vehicle.
  • Essential functions of this position require travel on most workdays to inspect, audit, examine, survey, or investigate clients, customers, or other regulated entities and write reports at those sites or employee's home. Employee reports to the agency's office for occasional meetings or events. Number and timing of work hours may vary daily or weekly to accommodate operational needs and staffing concerns at the client's or customer's worksite, minimize expenditures for repeated visits to complete the work, and allocate resources to complete assigned work effectively.

What You'll Need for Success :

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment :

  • Must have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) or have two (2) years of comparable experience.
  • Working knowledge of various weighing and measuring devices.
  • Working knowledge of weights and measure statutes and codes of specifications, tolerance, and regulations for weighing and measuring devices.
  • Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.
  • Knowledge of policies, program activities, and must be capable of applying these to assigned task.
  • Ability to observe, analyze, and evaluate conditions of weighing and measuring devices and make decisions regarding the course of action to be taken.
  • Ability to conduct special investigations pertinent to weights and measures.
  • Ability to utilize databases and Microsoft Excel to compile and report data.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities / Direct Reports :

    This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
