To be considered for the Marin County Fire Department's position of Fire Engineer Paramedic-Lateral, you must possess one year of paid, post-probationary, full-time experience at a level comparable to, or higher than, a Marin County Fire Engineer Paramedic, and currently employed in this capacity.

Under general direction, assumes responsibility for patient care at the scene of a medical emergency; drives fire vehicles and operates fire apparatus and equipment; responds to fire alarms, emergency medical and other calls and takes appropriate action in the protection of life and property; maintains vehicles, apparatus, equipment and stations; may lead, mentor the work of seasonal employees; performs various support assignments in addition to normal emergency response activities; and performs related other duties as assigned. Incumbents may be assigned to a 56-hour or 40-hour schedule at the discretion of the Fire Chief to perform duties that support the needs of the department.

Our Highly Qualified Candidate :

is knowledgeable in the operating and mechanical principles of fire apparatus and equipment. When in the role of a company officer, they must be able to exercise sound, independent judgment. The ideal candidate has personal and professional integrity, possesses initiative, is organized, has excellent oral and written communication skills, and is tactful. They must be able to perform all related duties with concern to all safety principles and practices related to the work. They effectively complete required reports, maintains tools and equipment, are knowledgeable of fire control procedures, emergency medical services and are an excellent team player. A Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification; college level coursework in fire science or a related field; experience performing fire suppression, wildland fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency medical procedures are also highly desirable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of :

  • State and local emergency medical technician paramedic procedures and treatment approaches; medical terminology; basic operation and mechanics of emergency medical response equipment.
  • The operating and mechanical principles of fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Field calculations of hydraulics for the proper and effective operations of equipment.
  • The physical layout of the County including street location, water distribution system and major traffic and fire hazards.
  • Organization, functions, policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the County fire department.
  • Fire suppression and rescue principles, practices, techniques, apparatus, and fire service hydraulics equipment.
  • Principles of fire behavior, physics, chemistry of fire, mechanics of pumps and effects of weather on fire.
  • Building design, construction, and material characteristics; weights, measures, and capacities.
  • Ventilation, forcible entry, ladder, and hose practices and techniques.
  • Related tools and equipment usage and maintenance.
  • Fire control safety procedures; wildland fire control practices and principles.
  • Effective teamwork techniques.

Ability to :

  • Make sound independent paramedic decisions; perform basic and advanced life support procedures; react quickly and calmly to emergency situations.
  • Drive and operate effectively and safely the full range of fire apparatus and equipment used by the Department.
  • Analyze emergency conditions and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action.
  • Write comprehensive reports and maintain accurate records; perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Read and interpret complex technical documents such as maps, diagrams, and textbooks.
  • Teach classes and participate in public education demonstrations and activities.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions; receive and carry out orders of emergency room medical staff.
  • Deal effectively with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Work and live harmoniously with co-workers.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    One (1) year of paid, post-probationary, full-time experience at a level comparable to, or higher than, a Marin County Fire Engineer Paramedic, and currently employed in this capacity.

    CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES :

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification which must be maintained throughout employment with the County.
  • Firefighter I Certificate issued by the California State Fire Marshal or must have successfully completed a California State Fire Marshal approved Firefighter I Academy.
  • Healthcare Provider CPR certificate issued by a training center approved by the California EMS Authority. Healthcare Provider cards issued by the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross meet the CPR requirement. Must be maintained throughout employment with the County.
  • Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic license issued by the State of California.
  • Job classes require travel between various County and business-related locations. Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver's license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the County, including review of a recent DMV history. Applicants are required to furnish a recent DMV driving record at the time of interview.
  • Class B Commercial Driver's License is required at time of appointment.

  • Firefighter I : California State Fire Marshal
  • EMT : Marin County EMS Authority
  • Paramedic : CA Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA)
  • Special Requirements : Incumbents are required to work 24-hour shifts, overtime, weekends, on call, and holidays; work at any station in the County on short notice; perform routine and repetitive work; attend meetings and classes both on and off duty; work under various adverse and hazardous conditions; wear uniform; assist in training other employees; and maintain personal grooming sufficient to wear protective gear and to ensure personal safety in performing essential duties.

    The ability to secure the following certificates and license are required at the time of hire :

  • Marin County Emergency Medical Services accreditation
  • A valid California Class C driver's license
  • California Physical Ability Test (CPAT) card
  • Candidates selected are subject to fingerprinting by the Sheriff's Department and must pass a California Department of Justice LiveScan, a background check, pre-employment Psychiatric Assessment, and medical prior to appointment.

    Driver's License : Ability to drive is an essential function of this assignment. Successful candidates must possess a valid California Class C driver's license. Submission of a satisfactory driving history obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicle within the last 6 months will be required at the selection interview.
