State of South Carolina is hiring : Highway Patrol Sergeant (Promotion) - Troop 9

Overview

THIS IS AN INTERNAL POSTING FOR CURRENT HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICERS ONLY.

This position serves the Troop 9 Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) Pee Dee Region : Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Marlboro, and Williamsburg Counties.

Serves as Team Leader of the South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT Pee Dee Region. Coordinates and supervises employees assigned to the MAIT Pee Dee Region.

Responsibilities

• Assumes direct responsibility for and performs administrative duties of MAIT Pee Dee Region. Ensures compliance with South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) policies and South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) procedures. Administers MAIT procedures for orderly operations.
• Organizes and directs unit personnel. Plans, schedules, and determines individual job assignments within the MAIT unit.
• Reviews subordinates’ reports, documents, and other investigative material for accuracy, legibility, and completeness.
• Expert in the field of Collision Reconstruction. Coordinates the investigation and reconstruction of complex motor vehicle collisions. Assists and reviews subordinates\' collision reconstruction reports.
• Prepares cases and presents them in appropriate courts; assists subordinates in prosecution of cases. Serves as an expert witness in criminal and civil courts.
• Conducts performance reviews of directly supervised employees and examines those of other subordinates.
• Maintains administrative and management abilities; demonstrates knowledge of duties and responsibilities of the Highway Patrol; supervises and evaluates subordinates; maintains knowledge of SC Motor Vehicle Laws, SCHP Manual of Operations, MAIT operations and procedures, and principles of collision reconstruction.

Qualifications and Requirements

State Minimum Requirements — A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.

Agency Minimum Requirements — Must have at least a high school diploma and the following additional requirements :

The knowledge, skills, and abilities are normally acquired through Patrol Training School, Supervisory, Planning, Administrative, and Collision Reconstruction courses. Additional skills are gained through in-service training and seminars. Applicant must hold an Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR) certification or an equivalent examination.

The employee receives verbal and written instructions from the Lieutenant on a routine basis through memorandums, rules, regulations, and policies of the Department. The employee must be able to make mid-level decisions and independent judgments on a daily basis.

Sergeant may have overnight travel for specials, seminar training, and call-outs for major incidents.
