Job Announcement$5,000 Sign-On Bonus* This position provides senior level leadership and is responsible for the overall development and management of large scale and/or multiple complex capital and non-capital projects for and in occupied spaces OR development and management of cross- functional capital renewal projects for and in occupied spaces that require working with all department and/or county levels and groups specific to the project design and implementation to address specific business needs. Works under the guidance and general direction of the Project Coordinator (Principal Engineer) and/or Division Director of Design, Engineering and Construction.
Other duties include:
- Responsible and authorized to lead design projects and resolve construction issues as primary representative of Fairfax County.
- Establishes project objectives and performance standards.
- Performs difficult professional engineering work in managing and participating in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of electrical, generator, life safety, photovoltaic (PV) solar, and EV equipment and systems (new, renovation and renewal).
- Performs review and analysis of plans and specifications for electrical, generator, life safety, PV solar, and EV systems, and features and compliance with code requirements.
- Serves as department subject matter expert and subject matter expert to multiple other county departments andagencies.
- As a registered Professional Engineer, leverages a strong technical background, excellence in design, attention to detail and quality control to perform and review electrical engineering calculations, reports, construction drawings, specifications, schedules and budgets for commercial building electrical, generator and life safety systems and/or components.
- As licensed Professional Electrical Engineer signs and seals own work product.
- Ensures the timely completion of projects assigned consistent with quality standards of the Facilities Management Department (FMD) and industry standards, as well as ensuring projects are financially and operationally viable and completed in a cost-efficient manner.

Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus, four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering or architectural field. Possession of a valid Virginia Professional Engineer or Architect license is required.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: - Valid driver's license
- Valid Professional Electrical Engineer License for the state of Virginia (Required). An individual who possesses a valid Professional Engineer license in another state will be granted a temporary exemption of a maximum of six months to this requirement pending the Virginia Board for Professional Engineers decision regarding that individual's application for reciprocity.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
BONUS ELIGIBILITY: Positions within this classification that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a strong background in commercial power distribution project, construction and energy management.
- Experience planning, design/engineering, or construction administration for the replacement and renewal of mission critical, commercial (occupied buildings greater than 100,000 gross sq. ft) electrical distribution and emergency back-up systems and subsystems.
- Experience as a lead Electrical Engineer P.E, directly responsible and accountable for the design (and sealing), engineering and construction administration of commercial building electrical distribution and emergency back-up systems and sub-systems projects.
- Experience as a lead Electrical Engineer P.E. for the planning, design, engineering and construction administration for photovoltaic (PV) solar systems.
- Strong contract management skills and experience as a lead Electrical Engineer in the development of contracts and authoring scopes/statements of work for design and engineering projects.
- Strong background and experience in energy management informing, validating and optimizing commercial power distribution and lighting systems design and operation.
- Experience managing projects valued at $500,000 or greater.
- Experience developing capital improvement programs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to climb ladders, access tight spaces, crawl, reach, lift 25 lbs, push 25lbs, etc. Ability to work with extended exposure to outside environment including harsh weather as well as inside environments of extreme heat and cold. Dexterity to use hand tools. Must be able to access facility equipment and equipment rooms. Must be able to communicate by phone. Must be mobile to access active construction sites. Must communicate with others verbally and in writing. Must drive a motor vehicle. Vision to see detail drawings, construction and discern color.
