Job description

The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Community College District is a collaborative and inclusive organization that strives for equity and equal opportunity and that serves a diverse student population. All Temporary Part-time Instructors are compensated in accordance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District and Shasta College Faculty Association / CTA / NEA.

Overview

This position requires IN-PERSON teaching and will focus on voice, choir, and guitar.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Experience

  • Successful applicants will be broadly prepared with depth of knowledge in the discipline and demonstrate the following knowledge and abilities :
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues to promote innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population;
  • Ability to work with students with a wide range of skills, motivations, and goals (academic and vocational);
  • Ability to design and deliver courses, including in-person, online, and hybrid modalities;
  • Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities;
  • Effective oral and written communication;
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency;
  • Ability to assess student learning outcomes;
  • Knowledge of and willingness to explore new technologies and teaching practices that benefit students and programs;
  • Experience with sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students, including those with disabilities;
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Meet classes and laboratories as assigned; develop and implement instruction consistent with official course outlines and District guidelines;
  • For online and hybrid courses, maintain online course components and provide regular student contact;
  • Distribute a syllabus during the first week of class describing course description, objectives, grading, testing, attendance, and requirements, per District guidelines;
  • Provide regular, timely feedback to students and return graded work promptly;
  • Assign final grades in accordance with District policy and applicable laws;
  • Respect student rights as specified by District policy and applicable laws;
  • Submit requisitions for textbooks and instructional materials in a timely manner and with cost consideration to students;
  • Refer students to tutoring and related services when appropriate;
  • Supervise students in off-campus activities when required by course or load;
  • Provide academic assistance during office hours; participate in professional development to remain current in the discipline;
  • Submit required administrative paperwork, including student learning outcomes, timely and accurately;
  • Discipline-specific responsibilities as assigned.
  • Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in evaluation processes as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement;
  • Continue to develop professional skills and stay current in subject matter knowledge;
  • Maintain and submit official records as required by District policy;
  • Abide by District property and safety policies;
  • Report absences due to illness or personal necessity to the supervising administrator;
  • Recommend purchases of instructional supplies and equipment as needed;
  • Fulfill obligations as established in the current collective bargaining agreement.
  • Other Activities

  • Part-time faculty are encouraged to engage in activities (not required), which may be eligible for flex pay or stipends, such as maintaining office hours and communicating them to students and division staff;
  • Participate in District governance processes, curriculum review, program review, and annual planning within established cycles;
  • Attend and participate in department and division meetings;
  • Assess learning outcomes and participate in outcomes processes;
  • Engage in required professional development to improve pedagogy and student success.
  • Education and Experience

    Education Required : Master’s in music OR Bachelor’s in music AND Master’s in humanities OR the equivalent.

    Experience Required : Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of staff and students, including those with physical or learning disabilities.

    Equivalency and How to Apply

    The state of California has minimum qualifications for academic positions in California Community Colleges. The college provides equivalency standards and procedures as described by the Shasta College Academic Senate.
