Position Summary

This position with be used to fill ten (10) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Technical Assistant positions for the Department of Food Science and Technology (FST) at Oregon State University (OSU).

Performs undergraduate research or field work in support of Dr. Joy Waite-Cusic's food safety / food microbiology research program.

Transferable Skill Development

Position Duties

Duties will be determined by Dr. Waite-Cusic, but may include research collaboration and related field work, data gathering and analysis, writing research reports and papers, and other duties as assigned.

85% Design, carry out, interpret, and report on experiments dealing with food microbiology. The candidate must analyze data, document activity, draw conclusions, and write up findings to be included in reports published in journals and / or presented at conferences. The position will also include organizational work pertaining to this topic, including documentation of appropriate samples and relevant experimental methods.

15% Of the work will include some elementary laboratory organization / design, where needed, in order to increase the laboratory's efficiency for such experiments.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

High School student : Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student : 6 credit hours per term
  • Undergraduate international student : 12 credit hours per term
  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School : 5 credit hours per term
  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School : 9 credit hours per term
  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
  • Additional Required Qualifications

    Determined by Dr. Waite-Cusic.

  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program (FST, MB, H, or related discipline)
  • The candidate must be able to communicate effectively in both written and oral English
  • The candidate must be able to work as part of a team and show a willingness to promote teamwork
  • Preferred (Special) Qualifications

  • Research experience in a BSL-2 food microbiology laboratory
  • Completion of upper division food or fermentation microbiology courses
  • A demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, including the ability to work with diverse faculty, students, industry clientele, and stakeholders
