Substitute Teachers are by Say Yes Buffalo Early Childhood Services division, on a per diem / as-needed basis, to cover the classroom in the absence of the full-time Early Childhood Lead Teacher (ELL T1). The primary role of the Substitute Teacher is to continue student learning along the continuum, that has been established.

Responsibilities and Duties :

  • Prepares a written summary of work completed.
  • Assumes all duties and responsibilities of the absent teacher.
  • Follows the teacher’s written lesson plans. Consult with the Instructional Coach and Early Learning CO Teacher (T2) to resolve questions and / or concerns.
  • Complies with all building procedures and schedules. Promotes the proper use and care of school property.
  • Makes the absent teacher aware of special situations or problems encountered.
  • Upholds policies and follows administrative procedures.
  • Implements effective pupil management procedures. Maintains high standards and upholds the student conduct code. Intervenes and reports concerns.
  • Develops and maintains a positive learning environment.
  • Works cooperatively with staff and parents.
  • Incorporates the effective use of available technology and upholds computer technology's acceptable use policies.
  • Respects personal privacy. Maintains the confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Take precautions to ensure staff / student safety. Do not leave students unsupervised.
  • Accepts personal responsibility for decisions and conduct.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities :

  • Frequent significant decision and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to apply Early Childhood Development theory in daily activities, and adapt to the individual needs of children.
  • Significant decision and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work as a team member collaborating with staff, families, and community resources.
  • Ability to maintain respectful relations and communication with staff, families, children, and community.
  • Ability to supervise preschool children and ensure a safe environment.
  • Ability to respond to events happening at all times in the classroom, outdoor play areas, and on field trips. This includes the physical ability to move quickly to respond to very active children who may need redirection or restraint to ensure their safety or the safety of others in the environment.
  • Ability to interact with children at their eye level, ie. sitting, kneeling, stooping, bending.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Minimum Requirements :

  • Associate degree ECE ( Early Childhood Education ) or CDA (Child Development Associate Certificate) preferred.
  • Prefer a minimum of one year experience in an early learning classroom, leading and / or executing lesson plans.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Bilingual English / Spanish skills are highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of community resources.
  • Complete and maintain annual training hour requirements.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, word processing, internet, and e-mail.
  • Pay Rate $20 per hour
