Position : Health & Wellness Specialist New Hanover County
Reports to : County Program Director
Status : Part-Time
Exempt : Hourly ($14 - $17 per hour) =
Primary Function :
The Health & Wellness Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating health and wellness programs at three New Hanover County elementary sites. This role focuses on promoting nutrition, physical activity, gardening, and overall wellness through engaging, hands-on experiences. The specialist will work closely with staff, members, and community partners to foster lifelong healthy habits.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :
Program Planning and Implementation :
- Develop and deliver engaging health and wellness programs that integrate nutrition, gardening, and physical activity.
- Implement the BGCA Healthy Habits curriculum, emphasizing smart nutrition, physical fitness, and mental wellness.
- Create interactive lessons and hands-on activities such as cooking demonstrations, fitness challenges, and mindfulness exercises.
- Manage and maintain the garden program, teaching members about planting, growing, and harvesting fresh produce.
- Utilize both indoor and outdoor garden spaces to educate members on farm-to-table concepts.
Staff Development and Collaboration :
Work closely with Unit Directors, program facilitators, and staff to integrate wellness initiatives across all sites.Partner with local health organizations, nutritionists, and fitness professionals to enhance programming.Coordinate guest speakers, field trips, and special events related to health, nutrition, and wellness.Program Monitoring and Evaluation :
Track member participation and engagement, assessing program effectiveness.Maintain accurate records of activities, progress, and outcomes.Adjust programming based on feedback, attendance, and impact.Member Engagement & Enrichment :
Foster a fun and interactive learning environment that encourages active participation.Lead structured group activities, discussions, and team-building exercises focused on wellness.Support club-wide initiatives, including fitness challenges, wellness fairs, and family engagement nights.RELATIONSHIPS :
Internal : Maintains close contact with club staff and operations team to discuss programming updates, address challenges, and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
External : Works with community partners, local health professionals, school staff, and parents to reinforce healthy habits beyond the club.
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED :
A college degree or relevant experience in health education, youth programming, or a related field.Experience planning and leading engaging activities for children.Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.Proficiency in Microsoft Office, email, and internet research.Ability to be active and on your feet for extended periods in a dynamic work environment.Reliable transportation and ability to travel between sites.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT :
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.Work requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and participation in physical activities.Travel to various sites is required. Mileage reimbursement is provided for travel outside assigned counties.DISCLAIMER :
