Class : Salaried; Full-time (2 years)

Department : Conservation

Location : College Station, TX

Who We Are

https : / / www.safariclub.org /

https : / / safariclubfoundation.org /

Hunting is an ancient tradition passed down from the earliest times of man to the present day. Hunters participate directly in the natural world and care enough to make sure that it continues in all of its awesome beauty and diversity.

Safari Club International (SCI) is a U.S.-based organization of more than 50,000 hunters and nearly 200 chapters worldwide, dedicated to protecting the right to hunt and to promote wildlife conservation. Between SCI and its sister organization, the SCI Foundation, we have put more than $70 Million on the ground for conservation since 2000. In the U.S. and abroad, hunters are part of a system that keeps the rivers, forests and fields intact and maintains the wildlife.

Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) has a 20-year history of being a leader in science-based, research-driven solutions to real problems facing wildlife conservation and sustainable use of wildlife resources. SCIF is active in domestic and international wildlife conservation, including with CITES and the IUCN, and is the host of the annual African Wildlife Consultative Forum. We partner with leading wildlife researchers at places like the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, Auburn University, and Michigan State University to bring the latest applied techniques to wildlife conservation issues.

Summary

The Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to support SCIF’s research on large carnivores in Africa and North America. The candidate should have a Ph.D. in wildlife ecology, quantitative ecology, statistics or related field. Applicants should have a demonstrated understanding of ecological modeling, particularly of current models for estimating density / abundance of marked and unmarked populations.

SCI Foundation is engaged in donor-funded applied research with several large carnivore species, including African leopards, African lions, cougars and grizzly bears. The incumbent will lead data analyses and development of density / abundance estimation models and other ecological models (occupancy, movement) to support wildlife conservation and management decisions. The incumbent will also participate in study design and development for new projects in this area of research. This is primarily a data management and analysis position; however, the possibility of participating in field work exists. This position provides an opportunity to engage in international research and interact with a broad range of stakeholders including state, national, and international agencies, landowners and the hunting industry. The incumbent must demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to, hunting as an essential part of biologically sound and ethically responsible international wildlife management.

Responsibilities

  • Take a lead role in analyzing and interpreting data collected via a variety of methods as part of ongoing conservation projects.
  • Conduct literature reviews, collaborate with team members in the design of future studies including defining goals, sampling design and protocols.
  • Mentor graduate student researchers.
  • Maintain research protocols and prepare progress reports.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals, prepare technical reports, and present at relevant conferences.

Start Date

The position is available immediately. Applications will be reviewed as they are received, with preference for applications received by 10 / 01 / 2025.

Location and Duration

The position will be based in College Station, Texas. Remote work will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

This position is for a term of two years with the possibility of extension. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, 12-month appointment, with a two-year duration and potential for extension based on funding. Salary is dependent on experience (~$60,000-65,000 per year) and includes benefits (competitive health insurance packages, paid time off and 401(k)).
