Perfusionist

Primary Function / General Purpose of Position

The Perfusionist is responsible for operating extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where necessary to support or replace a patient’s cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. This role ensures the safe management of a patient’s physiological and metabolic needs by maintaining adequate oxygenation, blood flow, and temperature control.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operate and monitor the heart-lung machine and extracorporeal circulation equipment during open-heart, cardiovascular, or other surgeries.
  • Manage physiologic functions including blood flow, gas exchange, anticoagulation, fluid balance, and temperature regulation.
  • Prepare, assemble, and test perfusion equipment prior to procedures to ensure safety and accuracy.
  • Assist in procedures involving ventricular assist devices (VADs), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and other circulatory support systems.
  • Monitor patient’s physiological and metabolic parameters during surgery and adjust perfusion support as needed.
  • Document perfusion activities, patient parameters, and any deviations in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain inventory, perform quality assurance, and ensure compliance with safety standards for perfusion equipment and supplies.

Licensing / Certification

BLS certification is preferred upon hire and required within 30 days and / or prior to independent patient care

Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) credential from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) (required)

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Perfusion Technology or related field (required)

Master’s degree (preferred)

Work Experience

1 year of clinical patient care experience (preferred)
