Job description

Job Summary

Under the general direction and leadership of the Associate Director the incumbent will provide comprehensive and holistic intake referrals and linking of services to serve the disability-related needs of students enrolled at CSULB who have a qualified disability and require access to programs and services. Incumbent will work across programs and serve as the primary contact for prospective and newly admitted students and will review highly sensitive and confidential disability documentation determine reasonable accommodations and provide on-going disability management support. The Accommodations and Retention Counselor assesses and determines the nature and extent of a wide variety of disabilities needed accommodations and required support services. Incumbent advises students regarding classroom accommodations and disability-related challenges related to education / career options and choices including consulting with faculty regarding student needs and disability related course concerns. Interprets federal and state laws and regulations to students faculty and the campus-at-large. The incumbent will serve as a resource for students staff and faculty regarding the purpose operation and services for BMAC and provides disability management and academic support workshops for all BMAC students. Incumbent coordinates programs that support outreach and ensure the delivery of high-quality services for students faculty and staff and provide coordination for various BMAC held events and student led disability awareness and advocacy.

Furthermore the incumbent provides services that are equitable inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct disability management counseling and participate in the Interactive Process with students with disabilities including a focus on Pregnant & Parenting Students as assigned.
  • Support student retention through BMAC training and programming efforts.
  • Provides implementation of BMAC services (e.g. notetaking Smart pen tutoring accessible parking accessible furniture scooter requests standardized exam / information release requests) in addition to the coding of BMAC students and assisting with data collection.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate is highly organized and skilled in planning coordinating and supervising programs activities and special events. They demonstrate strong analytical abilities to assess complex situations and implement effective solutions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential along with the ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex matters. This person thrives in a fast-paced environment manages time effectively and adapts to changing priorities while maintaining accuracy and professionalism. They exercise sound judgment discretion and confidentiality and can work independently with minimal supervision while meeting deadlines.

Additionally the candidate excels in building cooperative relationships and working collaboratively within a diverse multicultural environment. They possess strong interpersonal skills to engage with students faculty staff and the public and have experience presenting to varied audiences. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related software is necessary as well as the ability to learn and apply university policies and procedures. The candidate should be flexible to work evenings or weekends as needed and committed to maintaining a positive respectful attitude while consistently reporting to work prepared to perform their duties.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies procedures and guidelines including but not limited to safety civility information security and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the universitys commitment to a vision of excellence.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelors degree in one of the behavioral sciences public or business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

PPREFERRED :

Masters degree in educational counseling or related field preferred.

At least 2 years professional experience and knowledge in working with students with disabilities and programming especially with students with disabilities in a 4-year university setting.

Physical Summary

  • Light work - Job involves some lifting of medium weight objects (10-20 pounds) and / or 10% - 20% of the job involves standing or walking.
  • Licenses / Certificates

    Possess a valid California Drivers License to drive University vehicle.

    Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and / or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

    Salary placement is determined by the education experience and qualifications the candidate brings to the position internal equity and the hiring departments fiscal resources.

    Hiring Range : The hiring range for this position is $5083 - $5500 per month commensurate with candidates education experience skills and training.

    CSU Classification Salary Range : The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5083 - $7228 per month.

    Time Base

    1.0 time-base 40 hours per week.

    Duration of Appointment

    This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

    Additional Information

    The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21 2017 as a condition of employment.

    A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSULB will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information and / or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    Due to the nature of this position current CSULB employees are subject to a criminal record check unless they have successfully completed a criminal background check through CSULB within the past 12 months.
