Job description

As an AI Scientist II, you will contribute towards solving some of the most difficult algorithmic challenges encountered during design and development of cutting-edge AI solutions. In this role you will combine your deep knowledge of AI algorithms and foundational software engineering expertise to design and develop of AI applications that unleash the next generation of customer experiences and transform the way Best Buy operates day-to-day.

What you'll do

The Data and AI enablement teams are enabling capabilities to accelerate end to end data and AI adoption across Advanced Analytics, Product Teams, and Best Buy Sales and Operations Teams. The broader team is responsible for data strategy, availability, and adoption via self-service tools including AI model registry, activation of models for business, multichannel testing, customer relationship measurement. This team is committed to delivering the right data and AI solutions following the guidelines provided in our Responsible AI principles.

This role is in Best Buy's Applied Machine Learning (AML) organization within the broader Data & AI enablement umbrella. AML is tasked with driving Best Buy's AI journey to enhance customer facing experiences, improve internal operations, and productivity. The team leverages the best of AI models and implementation techniques for critical business domains like next gen search, product reviews & recommendations, price forecasting, fraud detection, cybersecurity and more.

This role is hybrid, which means you will work some days at a Best Buy location and some days virtually from home or another non-Best Buy location. The specific work arrangements vary by role and team. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and development of large-scale AI solutions, exhibiting excellence in applied science and algorithmic aspects, partnering closely with AI Engineers
  • Leverage the best AI algorithms & techniques to solve real business problems benefitting millions of Best Buy customers daily
  • Deeply hands on, utilizing extensive knowledge of AI / ML algorithms to contribute to the roadmap of Best Buy's core AI capabilities.
  • Partner with global cross-functional teams including AI, data, platforms, products, analytics, business and compliance

Basic qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a highly quantitative field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Math, Operations Research, etc).
  • 2 or more years of experience building ML and / or AI driven products
  • Strong machine learning and algorithmic background with a general understanding of at least one of the following areas : supervised and unsupervised learning methods, reinforcement learning, signal processing / time series modeling, deep learning, Bayesian inference, graphical modeling, or nonlinear / stochastic optimization
  • Intermediate level of experience with Python
  • Strong software design and implementation skills with a general purpose programming language (e.g. Scala, Swift, C++ / C#, Java and / or functional languages e.g Haskell, Clojure)
  • Preferred qualifications

  • Master's degree in a highly quantitative field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Math, Operations Research, etc)
  • Experience building, deploying, and serving real-time ML / AI models with ultra-low latency and high throughput, as resilient, scalable, cloud native services with ML engineering / science excellence
  • Experience building ML / AI solutions on a cloud platform with production grade pipelines.
  • Experience with one or more of MLOps, DataOps and Orchestration platforms like KubeFlow, Airflow, MLFlow, Spark, Argo for end-to-end model building, training, serving and monitoring.
  • Open source contributions or robust GitHub portfolio
