Pharmacy Technician – Sterile Compounding

Position Summary :

The Pharmacy Technician – Sterile Compounding is a vital member of the operations team, responsible for preparing sterile medications with accuracy, precision, and adherence to the highest standards of safety and compliance.

This role includes aseptic compounding (batched and non-batched), maintaining cleanroom standards, executing rigorous cleaning and sanitization protocols, and supporting quality assurance processes. You will also play a critical role in inventory management, equipment maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives that keep production running smoothly and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Sterile Compounding : Perform aseptic compounding in alignment with USP

, cGMP standards, and SOPs to ensure safety, sterility, and turnaround times.

  • Cleanroom Maintenance : Maintain an ISO-classified cleanroom by following strict cleaning, disinfection, and gowning procedures.
  • Supporting Tasks : Complete ancillary work such as bubble point testing, calibrations, autoclaving, and LEAN initiatives (e.g., root cause analysis, 5S, GEMBA).
  • Inventory Management : Monitor and restock PPE, lab supplies, and sterile compounding components; submit requisitions and manage warehouse orders.
  • Quality Assurance : Support quality checks, including sterility verification, particulate monitoring, and packaging accuracy.
  • Training & Competency : Maintain current training and demonstrate ongoing competency through evaluations and certifications.
  • Collaboration : Partner closely with pharmacists, QA personnel, and peers to ensure smooth production and continuous improvement.
  • Success Metrics :

  • Prepare 10–15 sterile compounds per day with accuracy and compliance.
  • Complete daily and weekly tasks, including cleaning, calibrations, and inventory checks (20–30 per week).
  • Successfully complete ongoing training modules and competency checks (12–15 per year).

  • Experience & Qualifications :

  • Certification & Licensure : Active registration with the state Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician or Technician Trainee. CPhT certification preferred. IV sterile compounding certification (ACPE) is a plus.
  • Sterile Compounding Knowledge : 1–2 years of sterile compounding or aseptic technique experience (preferred, not required).
  • Aseptic & Cleanroom Skills : Proven ability to maintain sterile environments, gown appropriately, and adhere to USP
  • Equipment & Laboratory Maintenance : Ability to clean, sanitize, calibrate, and troubleshoot compounding equipment.
  • Inventory Skills : Experience ordering, restocking, and maintaining sterile supplies; proactive in addressing expired / damaged inventory.
  • Quality & Documentation : Strong focus on compliance, accurate recordkeeping, and patient safety.
  • Technology Proficiency : Familiarity with pharmacy management systems, cleanroom monitoring tools, and other relevant technologies.
  • Soft Skills : Strong communication, adaptability to feedback, and a collaborative team approach.
