Position Overview
The Laboratory Technician will work hands-on with insects, nematodes, and plant material in laboratory, greenhouse, and insectary settings. This position involves performing routine, detailed experimental work and supporting entomology research and testing. The role requires adherence to strict safety and ergonomic standards. Comprehensive training will be provided on all safety, laboratory, and ergonomic protocols.
Key Responsibilities Conduct laboratory and greenhouse work involving insects, nematodes, and plant material.
Clip and thin plants used for testing.
Infest plant or artificial diet materials with various non-stinging, non-hazardous insect species.
Prepare and apply assay formulations using manual pipettes, hand sprayers, and track sprayers.
Grade and record insect assay results.
Prepare media used in entomology testing.
Maintain laboratory cleanliness, restock supplies, and support overall lab organization.
Scribe and assist evaluators during testing.
Work Environment & Safety Work will be performed across laboratory, greenhouse, and insectary environments.
Standing for extended periods is required.
Exposure to insects, latex, and chemicals (chemical sprays will be used).
PPE provided by employer for both laboratory and spraying work.
Medical clearance required to wear a PAPR, including Pulmonary Function testing and Cholinesterase evaluation (to be completed during onboarding).
Bee Survey to be completed later in employment.
Must adhere to all EH&S protocols , safety standards, and PPE requirements.
Requirements Education : Bachelor’s degree in Biology , Entomology , or Nematology preferred (recent graduates welcome).
Experience : Prior work experience required (not necessarily in a lab environment).
Experience in entomology or with insects / nematodes is strongly preferred.
Skills and Attributes : Self-motivated, reliable, and adaptable with the ability to shift focus as needed.
Works effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Strong communication, organization, and time management skills.
Able to follow detailed directions, protocols, and safety procedures.
Desire to learn and grow within a research environment.
