Join Fairfax County's award-winning stormwater team! This position will operate a variety of medium and light equipment within our department. You will be at the forefront of our operations, responsible for operating a range of mini to medium-sized equipment, including but not limited to a tandem-axle dump truck, single axle dump truck, backhoe, road roller, skid-steer loader, compressed air tools, etc., in all phases of stormwater infrastructure and road construction (scarifying, blading, compaction, equipment transportation, excavations, etc.). Conducts daily inspection, routine maintenance, and light repair on such equipment. Performs a variety of manual labor tasks such as digging, loading, snow shoveling, grass cutting, asphalt leveling and raking, brush removal, lifting, pushing, and other heavy physical work. Ensures that appropriate safety procedures are followed when operating and working near medium / small equipment. Duties are performed under supervision.

Position reports under the Maintenance and Operations Branch of Maintenance & Stormwater Management Division at 10635 West Drive Fairfax Va. 22030. Note : This position is required to be available 24 hours a day / seven days a week (24 / 7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Motor Equipment Operator position after completing six months of employment with satisfactory performance. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible. Employment standards minimum qualifications : any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and, two years of experience in the operation of medium / light motorized equipment.

Certificates and licenses required : a valid driver's license, a Class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL), Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of hire, and must obtain CDL Class "A" designation within 3 months of hire. Necessary special requirements : a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer. Preferred qualifications include five years of work experience operating mini to medium-sized equipment, ability to read and interpret engineering plans for utility location prior to excavation, ability to operate a skid-steer, ability to operate a backhoe and carry grade, and experience in snow plowing operations using a dump truck, skid-steer, or a backhoe. Physical requirements include passing pre-employment physicals and performing duties such as pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes.
