Overview
The Senior Cost Accountant is responsible for executing advanced cost accounting functions within a complex manufacturing environment. This role requires deep expertise in Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), Cost Accounting Standards (CAS), and the Truth in Negotiations Act (TINA). The ideal candidate combines technical accounting knowledge with analytical acumen to ensure accuracy, compliance, and insight in all aspects of cost management and financial reporting.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
The Senior Cost Accountant performs a wide range of duties related to inventory valuation , government cost proposal development , TINA rate maintenance , and management reporting . The position requires exceptional analytical ability, sound judgment, and creative problem-solving skills to ensure compliance with US GAAP, FAR, and company policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute all inventory valuation procedures during month-end close, including reconciliations, valuation analysis, journal entries, and financial reporting.
- Calculate and maintain reserves for excess, obsolete, quarantine, and aged inventory , including lower-of-cost-or-net-realizable-value (LCNRV) adjustments.
- Develop and oversee inventory-related processes and internal controls , including cycle count planning and variance analysis.
- Create and maintain TINA-compliant rates , supporting government cost proposals and audit documentation, in accordance with relevant regulations.
- Prepare certified cost and pricing data for government contracts in compliance with FAR and CAS requirements.
- Calculate, monitor, and analyze manufacturing overhead rates and production cost variances to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Review cost allocation methodologies to identify opportunities for process optimization, cost reduction, and improved working capital efficiency.
- Design and develop analytical tools and dashboards in Power BI to enhance financial and operational visibility.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to define and track key performance indicators (KPIs), ensuring data integrity and actionable insights.
- Participate in internal, external, SOX, and DCAA audits, providing timely and accurate responses to ensure compliance.
- Support special projects and ad hoc analyses as assigned.
- Maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct and compliance with all regulatory and company requirements.
Qualifications
Prior experience as a Cost Accountant in a complex manufacturing environment .Strong knowledge of FAR, CAS, and TINA regulations.Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline (CPA or CMA preferred).Advanced proficiency with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, or similar) and Microsoft Excel .Experience with Power BI or other business intelligence tools is a plus.Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment.
