Job description

Purpose :

The department of Modern Languages & Literatures at Santa Clara University (SCU), a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a full-time, renewable, non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor in French & Francophone Studies. SCU is a welcoming and inclusive community of teaching scholars whose work is grounded in the university’s fundamental values . Those values, which include academic excellence, social justice, and community engagement, are infused with a culture of care that defines our community—upholding the dignity of all. The university draws on the many resources of the greater Bay Area, including Silicon Valley, where we are located.

We are seeking to hire a candidate who can demonstrate superior pedagogical acumen and instructional effectiveness at the lower-division level, and who has the ability to build curricular connections with other disciplines (such as STEM, Business, Political Science, International Relations, Communication…). We are particularly interested in candidates whose area of specialization focuses on contemporary French & Francophone cultures and who has the ability to combine their expertise with other areas of need such as French for professional purposes, Environmental studies, medical humanities, translation and translingual pedagogies that would help us better serve a diverse body of students. Ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable but not required. We expect the candidate to actively contribute to our curriculum which combines rigorous training in language and cultures with a variety of opportunities for internships, independent research and cross-cultural interactions perfect for students considering global careers in business, international relations or government related positions. The candidate should also expect to engage in collaborative work to support our curriculum development as well as our outreach and community-engagement efforts.

The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in professional activity (15%), and service (15%) to the department, college, and university. Assistant Teaching Professors are appointed for an initial term of three years. Reappointment to subsequent terms of three years depends upon the availability of funds, persistent programmatic need, and superior teaching, service, and professional activity.  Promotion to Associate Teaching Professor and then Teaching Professor is possible under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
