Job Description
Special Education Teacher in the Whitney Hall School program within a special education environment. This position reports to the Principal and the Vice President of Education and works with the entire Children's Center staff regularly. The Special Education Teacher is expected to perform other related duties as assigned.

Overview
The Special Education Teacher is accountable for planning and implementing instruction that meets individual student needs and aligns with IEP goals, while maintaining a safe and supportive classroom and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities
- Plan instructional activities for students which provide for individual differences and varying grade level expectations.
- Teach English, Math, Language Arts, Science and / or Health, Reading, Life Skills and Social Studies.
- Assess academic strengths and weaknesses of each student.
- Prepare a written IEP for each student in keeping with recommendations of the PPT.
- Prepare quarterly benchmark reports and semi-annual progress reports on students.
- Participate in PPTs, Treatment Teams and Case Conferences for assigned students.
- Use a variety of teaching techniques that foster student involvement.
- Ensure adherence to student's IEP and special education timelines for completing and reviewing evaluations and conducting annual IEP reviews.
- Maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment by consistently implementing routines, transitions and procedures.
- Prepare records and reports with accuracy and timeliness.
- Set up substitute folders.
- Attend CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) trainings and recertifications and be able to use techniques as needed.
- Maintain all required agency mandatory trainings.
- Participate in staff and departmental meetings, in-service training programs, and attend meetings as required, workshops, and conferences. Effectively utilize supervision.
- Maintain appropriate personal boundaries with young people and families served at The Children's Center of Hamden. Adhere to The Children's Center of Hamden's Boundary Code of Ethics.
- Perform any other related work assigned.
- Be aware of the Policy and Procedure Manuals and access information as needed.
- Promote the agency Inclusion Policy by identifying inequities and bias, raising concerns, interacting with others respectfully, and respecting diverse experiences.
- Maintain care, welfare, safety and security of the children by reporting potential safety hazards.
Minimum Qualifications
One to two years teaching or related experience desired. Ability to work in a special education setting with emotionally disturbed and learning disabled children and adolescents. Some knowledge of substance abuse issues is desired. Comprehensive and current knowledge in all subjects taught. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to differentiate instruction across a range of grade levels.
Licensure / Certifications
Comprehensive Special Education K-12 (165). Candidates eligible for DSAP will also be considered.
