Job Overview
The Senior Database Developer will serve as the technical lead for database architecture and development supporting the FMCSA TruData Modernization initiative. This role requires deep expertise in AWS native data services, ETL / ELT processes, and enterprise data warehouse solutions to ensure successful migration and modernization of FMCSA's critical safety data infrastructure. The Senior Database Developer will provide hands-on technical leadership in designing, implementing, and maintaining data solutions that support approximately 100 data marts and enable data-driven decision making for motor carrier safety operations nationwide.
This role will be a full-time position with work performed both on-site at DOT Headquarters, 1200 New Jersey Ave SE, Washington, DC 20590 and remotely, with core hours Monday-Friday : 6 : 00 AM - 6 : 00 PM EST. Position is contingent upon award and upon client approval.
What You\'ll Do
AWS Cloud Data Architecture
- Design, develop, and maintain data infrastructure using AWS native services including Redshift, Glue, S3, Lake Formation, Kinesis, and DynamoDB
- Lead technical implementation of data warehouse and data lake architectures supporting FMCSA mission systems
- Support architecture reviews using AWS Well-Architected Framework principles
- Implement real-time and batch data pipelines for continuous data ingestion and processing
Data Migration & ETL / ELT Development
Develop and optimize ETL / ELT scripts for data migration from legacy MCMIS and other source systemsEnsure data platform operates in parallel with legacy systems until complete sunset of deprecated infrastructureMaintain connectivity with identified data sources and manage data ingestion processesSupport transition of data sources from legacy to modernized applicationsData Mart Development & Management
Create and maintain state-specific data marts supporting SafeSpect, PRISM, and ITD program requirementsSupport approximately 100 data marts currently approaching full capacityOptimize data sharing between applications and standardize reference data across systemsDevelop reports and dashboards for data visualization and analytics using business intelligence toolsDatabase Performance & Optimization
Perform database performance tuning, query optimization, and capacity planningImplement advanced SQL and stored procedure developmentConduct data quality validation and implement validation frameworksExecute database administration and optimization for Amazon RedshiftProduction Support & Maintenance
Provide Tier III production support for delivered capabilities and critical issue resolutionRespond to vulnerabilities remediation activities to assure identified issues are resolved in DOT mandated timelinesSupport and maintain current and future datasets to the DatahubPerform corrective, adaptive, perfective, and preventative maintenance activitiesCollaboration & Documentation
Collaborate with MC-I team to establish baseline documentation and mature technical specificationsEnsure all database solutions comply with Section 508 accessibility requirementsDevelop and maintain technical documentation for data systems and processesWhat We\'re Looking For

Education & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Database Management, or related fieldMinimum of seven (7) years database development experienceMinimum of three (3) years hands-on AWS data services experienceDemonstrated experience with large-scale data migrationsAWS Data Services Expertise
